It would be very easy to get into any of the UCs if you go to community college for 2 years and then transfer. It's really easy to get high grades in CC and the UCs are required to enroll a certain amount of transfer students each year. See the link below for the exact numbers. I wouldn't recommend studying literature at universities though. Believe it or not, it's for the most part postmodernist indoctrination. You'll be required to read Foucault, Derrida, and the like (or worse, feminists and marxists) and interpret books by applying their frameworks. Study something more beneficial like classics or philosophy instead.

for what it's worth i got into a top 5 in cali with 3.95 gpa and 2200 SAT (this was before they changed the test), sports and extracurriculars. Freshman year one of my roommates (mexican) had 1600 SAT (this was when the max you could score was 2400) and legitimately did not know how to write an essay, as in, he was not aware and/or had never been taught the basic format of intro + body paragraphs + conclusion. For what it's worth he was from the hood and he told me in his high school of 1000+ there were maybe 4 white kids in total

had a friend who knew he wanted to go to law school off the bat so did his first two years at a CC for an easy 4.0 before transferring to a UC, by the time law school applications rolled around they don't care where you got your credits they just look at your GPA and test scores

As far as the California education system is concerned, personal identification is the only relevant metric for ethnicity. It is official policy. This means you can claim you identify as Nigerian and there is no legal recourse or academic punishment available. Just lie, nobody cares at the end of the day. Your personal identification is not public and likely the only person who will ever know is you. Your teachers can't look that up. English major, can confirm this is what happens once you try to take upper division courses. You're forced to take a critical literary theory course. At my school it was ENG 300, nicknamed "English major boot camp" by the department, and in it you're drilled in literary theory frameworks and taught how to analyze literature using these schools of thought as a critical lens. You can make the most of it, I tried to, but it can be utterly demoralizing if you genuinely love literature and just want to immerse yourself in it. ENG 300 winnowed a lot of the English major hopefuls out of the department, as it was intended to.

Pretty much my experience. They're all hypocrites. Portraying themselves as super transgressive and skeptical while all towing the same set of moralizing views: Capitalism ebil, Earth/nature good, binaries bad (except my own), etc.. If I could go back I'd definitely pick a different major.

If you live in CA it can be. Out-of-staters pay exorbitant fees. Caltech might be good to get into for engineering but ask around.
If you just want a business/English/generic degree in any old bullshit looks into CSU system, they are cheaper.
Berkeley, Stanford, Davis, UCLA, and a few others are bright spots with some excellent programs. They will cost you an arm and a leg though. Each has specialities such as Agriculture at Davis.
My buddy went from CCSF straight to Berkeley for philosophy but not sure what he did with that. He was gyaranteed admission due to transfer agreement.
