Probably Theodore Sturgeon, he had plenty of critical acclaim while he was alive, but I don't think he is read nearly as much any more. I honest think he is one of the best SF writers (in short story and novel form) of his time. Also The Dreaming Jewels is a very underrated genre-crossing novel, it's crazy just how good some of the stuff considered to be 'Young Adult' was back in the 50's.
