I need help /lit/

>Be me
>At book fair
>Browsing stalls
>Go to one
>Something called "theosophy"
>Full of budget occult books
>Person behind counter notices me, begins talking about how great karma and shit is
>Tuning him out entirely
>Need to make conversation
>Begin thinking about what I know about the esoteric
>/lit/ flashbacks
>Ask him if he has any books by Guenon
>He looks genuinely offended
>Begins going on about how awful Guenon is and how wrong he was about theosophy
>Talks about how Guenon is an alt-right influence(?) and how his thought is influencing Putin through Dugin, and how Putin's evil because he "obviously doesn't believe in Karma"
>Feel bad
>Want to leave
>Buy his cheapest book as an apology and run

It's Theosophy, meaning that it has no history before Blavatsky made it up and its sort of a haphazard jumble of different eastern ideas, some of which have little relation to the eastern idea they reference, it's mostly popular among boomers. Guenon BTFOs it pretty hard in his book on Theosophy, read it if you want the counter-theosophy perspective, you can check it out here

https://archive.org/details/reneguenon/1921-Theosophy-HistoryOfAPseudo-religion/

Its maybe worth checking out as a curiosity or oddity, but there are much better writers on esoterism (Guenon or Hanegraaff), and the actual eastern source writings are better too.

Both people on the left and right have appreciated and been influenced by Guenon, maybe people on the right tend to like him more but he's not any sort of 'alt-right ideologue', his perspective is kind of antithetical to all modern politics

Esoteric bookstores are the best, it's shame you got a more leftie one since the best ones are the ones that flirt with fringe shit for the sake of fringe

I would read it, TS is fun and worth mining for insights. More people should read HPB just for fun.

Theosophy is pretty cool to read about now. They helped popularize all that Hyperborea and Atlantis stuff, and the idea of "root races" like the Aryans, and combined it with (distorted, inaccurate) information from Eastern religions, which people were learning about for the first time. It was like the prototype of the New Age movement and the 60s counterculture with hippies getting into Hinduism and shit, and also kind of feels like the prototype of geek culture, influencing all the fantasy fiction and RPGs and video games since.

He's not far off, oriental studies really only picked up mid century and only became widely available and a craze in the late 19th

Deussen's floruit was 1870s and on, Muller's really popular stuff wasn't that much earlier, Sacred Books of the East publication started 1880 or so

Could've been a kino religion if they dropped all the autism about the masters and took more from Neoplatonism
