20268497 No.20268497 [Reply] [Original]

self-help gets a lot of hate on here. I'm trying to develop a library of self-help books for my high school students that might help them through trying times but also aren't indoctrinating them into sky-fairy theologies. I don't read self-help myself so I have no idea what's good and what's crap.

any recommendations, anons?

You realize that that would actually be the best thing for them? They need a community, not books. Doesn't even matter which theology it is, Christian Muslim Buddhist whatever, just somewhere they can go and get support and someone will sympathize with their problems is enough.

>Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) have been rising among gay and bisexual men, with increases in syphilis being seen across the country. In 2014, gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men accounted for 83% of primary and secondary syphilis cases where sex of sex partner was known in the United States. Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men often get other STDs, including chlamydia and gonorrhea infections. HPV (Human papillomavirus), the most common STD in the United States, is also a concern for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. Some types of HPV can cause genital and anal warts and some can lead to the development of anal and oral cancers. Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men are 17 times more likely to get anal cancer than heterosexual men. Men who are HIV-positive are even more likely than those who do not have HIV to get anal cancer.

That's rich.
The pedo priest meme is just jewish misdirection based on false accusations circulated without proof to distract from all the pedophilia among jews and homosexuals.

Beyond disgusting - this is something worse than the wretchedness of ambiguity towards God where you somehow still have the self-confident swagger of a corpse made alive by the technicality of worms feasting on your leftover soul and then you have the unbelievable void of thought blooming up from your necropolis of mercilessness and uselessness that there is now something in this world that can help. Help what? Help get grades gooder? Get into college? Be happy? There is no help without God. Without God we are just a hurtling mass of moss grown by radiation into a gelatin of consciousness which has learned language by some accident of temporarility which then looks out onto the void through the mortal ensconcement of culture and shudders, "What a wild ride! I'm so fulfilled with returning to nothingness." Please. If you are fulfilled and motivated by a brief sojourn of insanity through two infinite nothingnesses then you need help.

People shouldn't be motivated by anything if they think the Earth will be extinguished in a heat death.

Long answer: there are gems out there but the term "self-help" has been tainted by modern society into bad things. "Religious" could mean "spiritual", and spiritual is not bad and dogmatic. But the religious, even with dogmas, had a purpose across human history, but to "get it" you have to see the whole picture.

Try to be open and you'll find.

the textbook is part of the same racket as the exam, where the same or closely related institutions are both creating a problem (exam) and offering a solution (textbook). that's why textbooks "work," in their limited sense.

the self-help author, similarly, has no solutions to offer other than to problems he himself "creates," and his book will typically be designed to provoke anxiety that can be calmed by its purchase (eg "the secrets of x" - "oh my god, am i doing x wrong? do i know the secrets or not?"). a self-help book purchase solves the problem of not having enough self-help books, created by seeing a shelf of self-help books at the store. real problems remain unsolved - they lay outside the domain of the racket.
