I mean the book ended exactly as they told you it would. Winston died, drone#9382 was created. I didn’t have a particularly strong reaction to the final bullet actually killing him but as we had the whole third act to know unequivocally that he was going to die.
The actually interesting part of the novel to me that gets glossed over in every discussion I read is the concept of newspeak. People get lost in the weeds with that massive appendix at the end that goes into minute detail about the structure of a made up language. But what’s actually intriguing to me is the end goal of newspeak. Creating a language that effectively controls thoughts. Reducing someone’s ability to articulate abstract thought would work to erase their ability to ever effectively rebel. Sure they would be able to conceptualize the ideas internally, they could even invent words to bring the concept out of their minds. But how do you explain what your invented word means, especially in the surveillance society that exists in Airstrip 1.
Ted Chiang has an interesting counter idea on this concept in his short story "Understand". Where the protagonist took some mind enhancing drugs and takes it upon himself to create a whole new language because English isn’t refined enough for his mind anymore. Bringing up the idea that the internal language you think in actively effects how you think. Which was further explored in "Stories of Your Life" the basis for the movie "Arrival"

I was hoping almost until the very end that O'Bryan *was* actually a part of the Brotherhood but he was infiltrated so deep into the Party that he has to sacrifice Winston and continue with the process against him.

you seem smart so i almost hesitate to post this but i don't think he died in the end? can you convince me? i think it makes for a more effective ending that he survives

Because he didn't. It's just a daydream/imagination. But it's also pretty clear, he will get a bullett to the head eventually, he just doesn't know when.

I always interpeted it at him just there in the cafe as a soulless husk.

O'brien said he'd be killed, but it didn't need to happen so quickly after his rehabilitation.
