Refute hedonism.

>> No.20250095

>>20250090
Epicurus himself “refuted” the other schools of hedonism. Epicureanism is called negative-hedonism

Permanent damage to your brain should be a rebuttal to hedonism.

Can someone define hedonism? You’re all arguing for no reason

>> No.20250143

>>20250135
Video games and masturbation doesn't damage your brain. Even if they did, the damage would be so minor it wouldn't be significant.

Besides, what do you do? You participate in hobbies other people don't care about. Hedonism, in your definition is basically "stop doing what I don't like"

>> No.20250146

So if hedonists pursue pleasure and think of it as highest good, what will they do with unomfortable truths? If they encounter a truth uncomfortable and off putting? I can only imagine they avoid it, hedonism would lead to escapism.

Didn't Epicurus say he only indulged in cheese once in a while so he would still enjoy it?
I don't think he would condone fapping and gaming all day.

This thread is about Epicureanism.

>> No.20250168

Many if not all of the greatest personal and societal achievements are done by people getting out of their comfort zone whether is was doing the thing or the process of getting there. Hedonism discourages that which makes it a malicious philosophy in every way.

Read the fucking book, it's short enough to be read on the shitter

>And since pleasure is ourfirst and native good, for that reason we do not choose every pleasurewhatever, but often pass over many pleasures when a greater annoyance ensuesfrom them. And often we consider pains superior to pleasures when submissionto the pains for a long time brings us as a consequence a greater pleasure. While therefore all pleasure because it is naturally akin to us is good, not all pleasure is worthy of choice, just as all pain is an evil and yetnot all pain is to be shunned.

That was deliberate because I thought it would get more (You)s.
As you can see the bust is of Epicurus. I am mostly interested in discussion of Epicureanism.
You asked for a specific definition so use that. If you want to discuss hedonism in general be my guest.

>> No.20250196

Back when I lived hedonistically (watched porn all day, ate junk food all day, played video games 10 hours a day, had a 25 hour sleep schedule, overindulged in everything), I was suicidally miserable. Now that I quit all those things and acquired self-discipline, wake up early in the morning and force myself to do productive things, I feel infinitely better. So, there's your refutation: pure hedonism doesn't even make you feel good, it defeats itself.

The definition for hedonism is so vague, basically anyone can apply their own meaning to it. Then it can be used as an attack on other people or as cautionary advice

It's just another negatively connotated buzzword with no actual clear-cut definition. One person will use it to talk about masturbation, another will use it in a political debate, so on and so forth

A clearer definition is to say that we should seek that life which we would prefer to live over all the other possible lives we could have lived.

Epicurus still believed that happiness is the highest good. Seeking long-term happiness rather than short-term fulfillment would lead to greater pleasure. This is different from how hedonism is commonly understood but it's why he's considered as one.

Agreed but temperance is required for one to keep enjoying things for a long time. If you were to fuck all the twinks and drink all the wine in 2 weeks you'll have ruined those things for yourself in the future.
