20224965 No.20224965 [Reply] [Original]

I was skimming through my sketchbooks and came across cowboys I drew years ago and thought, "Hey didn't I send this to..." I slowly began breaking in cringe-sweat as I recalled that one time I sent Cormac McCarthy a selfmade book of art.

It felt like a good idea at that time. It was fun so I lost all reservation and spilled my heart and soul into it. Today I found a copy of it again and wasn't able to keep a straight face.

The emotional fanletter, clustered formatting, the animeish art, and that embarrassing song lyric plastered next to a picture I sprinkled with a Photoshop snow effect.

OH MY GOD WHAT WAS I THINKING

it's like donkey kong country 2 vs donkey kong 64. dkc was a polished and tight 2d platformer that's one of the best in the genre, it looks great, plays great, sounds great, beautiful world. pretty much perfect.

dkcountry was a jump into 3d and despite the huge technological "improvement" it's total dogshit, a junk version of mario 64, plays shit, looks shit, not fun.

that's kinda what this guy did imo, spent years learning to do shadows to make it 3d, which adds nothing actually, and meant he neglected everything else.

The original is not "stylized" it's just a lack of detail and skill. The 9 years later isn't exactly good for such an amount of time but it's definitely better. And yes fold marks do constitute as detail, which that image has more of. Of course if someone seriously practiced for 9 years they should be a lot more skilled maybe that person just didn't practice much.

My english teacher back then was the type who'd watch Oprah and I am sure she saw The Road recommendation on that show, so one day she didn't want to teach us actual literature and instead put on The Road the movie. I don't draw fanart but Cormac McCarthy is the only fanart I did. A lot of this stuff was drawn on-and-off throughout the years and I sent a handful of artwork with a fanletter when I was 22

I picked a simpler and less realistic style because i wanted to pump out a lot of sketches at once, but then i realized that the style was out of touch with the subject matter. This may or may not work depending on how i pulled it off. Sometimes a simpler style may work as a way to detach the audience the more ridiculous, tragic, or violent the content is. Example: penguins memory, barefoot gen

the scene where the hermit makes that blue moldy rabbit stew (the rabbit ears is a nice playful touch against the utter fuckedupness of the book) and they talk about god:

The way of the transgressor is hard. God made this world, but he didn't make it to suit everybody, did he?

I don't believe he had me much in mind.

Aye, said the old man. But where does a man come by his notions. What world's he seen that he liked better?

I can think of better places and better ways.

Can ye make it be?

No.

No. It's a mystery. A man's at odds to know his mind cause his mind is aught he has to know it with. He can know his heart, but he don't want to. Rightly so. Best not to look in there. It ain't the heart of a creature that is bound in the way that God has set for it. You can find meanness in the least of creatures, but when God made man the devil was at his elbow. A creature that can do anything. Make a machine. And a machine to make the machine. And evil that can run itself a thousand years, no need to tend it. You believe that?

I don't know.

Believe that.

thanks. I have my own series of stories I plan on turning into graphic novels.
A synopsis of a story I am still working on: >>/lit/thread/S14707277#p14707431

My art skills aren't where I want them to be yet (even 7 years later, all the drawings here are at least 7 years old), and I don't have the life experience or the mental library of references to truly finish the stories (devil is in the details). This is not me being humble, I am just aware of how far I have to go.

Regarding writing good stories: Cormac McCarthy became a good writer by doing his research, reading a lot of stuff, even travelling to and living at the places he was writing about. He even stayed unemployed as humanly possible to spend his time and energy into reading and writing. Robert Heinlein had actual military experience to write Starship Troopers. Dostoevsky was a rebel and nearly executed by the Russian government for reading some book. Great writers don't become great writers by sitting in an ivory tower jacking each other off, they go and experience life and then draw from their experiences.

It can take a lifetime to become a decent storyteller. I am more focused on being a good storyteller than being a good artist, but hiring another artist is pretty cost prohibitive. Hence, I am still drawing. My natural style is hilariously out of sync with the subject matter of even my own stories but I don't mind it, I am focusing on technical skills instead.

It's been years since I read BM but I remember reading that Glanton was a manlet. Some other real life sources also mention he was short and stocky. This doesn't take away from his abilities or character, in fact it makes Glanton more layered. It would be contrived if he was some chad or a clint eastwood-looking badass, and he isn't even portrayed that way in the book. This is the type of guy who prefers his horse to people and becomes a softie for a dog while he has no problem killing people, desperately sells his soul to the devil when he is cornered by the Indians he was trying to get, and gets more wasted and insane the more he wraps around the Judge's finger. He stares at the horizon towards the direction where his home is. He could've been lived a normal life without getting exiled at one point, yet he now leads a group of scraggletoothed degenerates fucking around in the desert. I like how corncob developed him and worked with his real-life references.

I also drew a design of his wife for no particular reason. Apparently in real life the real Glanton's wife was famous for her beauty and he got her hand in marriage by threatening her dad with a gun. Imagine getting a girlfriend that way in modern times.

thanks. I don't think I will be doing fanart of movies/games anytime soon. For whatever reason I never had the need to add my own interpretations of something that is already visually existent and fine as it is. Books on the other hand leave a lot up to imagination so I come with my own shit, but even then nothing got me flowing like The Road and especially BM did. I think it's the descriptions and the subject matter.

I might do something with the biblical Samson story (the interpretation based off of "Lion's Honey: The Myth of Samson" by David Grossman).

WIP of the scene where Glanton gets his fortune told. I only had a vague memory of this scene so it was bizarre finding this among my old files. Here is it from the book:

Un maleficio, cried the old woman. Que viento tan maleante ...

By god you will shut up, said Glanton, drawing his revolver.

Carroza de muertos, llena de huesos. El joven que...

The judge like a great ponderous djinn stepped through the fire and the flames delivered him up as if he were in some way native to their element. He put his arms around Glanton.

You know what, I take that back. There are some games I like that I would make fanart of. Secret of Evermore, and Hylics. SoE was Jeremy Soule's first project (Soule composed the soundtrack for the Harry Potter movies). Hylics is an indie game with a nice soundtrack too and some trippy aesthetics, similar to the movie Fantastic Planet (1973).

The inspo for Tobin was Dega from the movie Papillon (1973), a story about the innocent convict Henri who escapes a french prison colony. There is no particular reason why. I have more pictures of this character somewhere but I have to find it.

Blood Meridian in a disney style that doesn't hold back on the blood and gore but that doesn't try to be overtly edgy beyond the actual darkness of the original story would be kino.

A visual depiction is possible but the gore and violence won't be the most challenging part. Japanese manga and anime have violent, fucked up shit going on all the time. Korean movies can get pretty fucked up. The violence and fuckery in Blood Meridian is pretty bad but it's not the worst that exists in the media. Japanese stories about feudal battles are way more violent and brutal, women and children unspared.

I think the challenge is that a lot of things will be lost in translation from written to visual mode. The themes. Some dialogue, since the Judge has multiple monologues. Another challenge would be to capture the mood. Corncob describes mountains for a pretty long time, how are you gonna capture that? The stars burning in the sky when the man shoots some boy in the train? Or the vastness as the kid is looking into the ocean when he reaches California and McCarthy describes a whale swimming around in there? How do you make that work?

There's also some things that heavily rely on a suspension of disbelief. How does the kid kick toadvine in the face, or the black jackson (whoever it was) get his head chopped off in one swipe? It's one thing to read about it but seeing it visually is another.

Visual depiction is possible, it just needs to be done with good judgment on what to keep and what to change as it translate from prose to whatever media it's being translated to.

You guys, I found the page with the embarrassing song lyric plastered next to the picture I sprinkled with a Photoshop snow effect.

So I made a 40 page book with fanart in it, and I even somehow found 8 other artists who volunteered to join me and contributed their work as well because I said I will be sending it to corncob. "Hey we love your shit" - pretty much the gist of the art collection.

The best part is that once I made the book and sent it to corncob, I sent a copy to everyone else. Nobody responded except this one dude who was like "hey, this is a nice collection. Let me know if Cormac McCarthy replies".

As I said, it was pretty bad.

More art to come....

Back then I was really into GEKIGA style of manga (literally "dramatic pictures" in Japanese) and wanted to see what BM would look like as one. The actual Japanese title is 血の子午線

I didn't send this to corncob, no way.

OP your art is great, and now I want Blood Meridian done in this style. Sell it as the western Madoka Magica, with this cute Disney cowboy style that devolves into the horror and brutality of the book.
Hell, you could probably build your own story, dunno how much you can use before the lawyers start knocking on your door, but since its an entirely diffeent medium... in any case, cool stuff OP.

I think it crosses copyright territory once you start selling it or publishing it, or if it damages corncob's (or publishing company's) ability to make their own BM comic in the future. Yeah no my fanart ain't damaging shit lol, I did these for practice of my own creativity and because I wanted to send corncob something.
