It is a detective story from around the 1960s. The main character cheated on his wife and has been digging a ditch as penance. Hippies are setting up a new restaurant, and one of them gets murdered right before the opening. There is also a crooked cop who ends up getting murdered. I've been trying to remember the title for 2 years. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? It's a very good book.
