Is Gene Wolfe actually one of the greatest writers of all time or is he just a /lit/ meme?

Have a go at something simpler to test the waters, Fifth Head of Cerberus or Soldier of the Mist (you'll more likely find that packaged in an omnibus with Soldier of Arete that is titled 'Latro in the Mist')

Having not read all his novels, and none of his short stories yet, I can at least say that not everything he did is a masterpiece. Book of the New Sun is special and I don't think he or anyone else has done something like it. But if you removed that, he would still be a very high quality spec fiction author with an impressive body of work. He was putting out a lot of stuff before, during, and after BotNS, including an additional 7-book series in the same world. And those aren't massive tomes that drag on, with huge ups and downs in quality throughout the series, they're all about 300 pages and of a solid consistency throughout.
He was a great author. He wasn't a gay fag or a pussy either.

Heinlein for dummies, and Heinie is pretty dumb

Yes, he is one of the best. Just read his works. Everything is worth it. He is a master and discovering him was probably one of the best things that happened to me these past few years.

he has some great books but I would not consider him a great of all time. he can be too gimmicky in my opinion

Ursula K. Le Guin means nothing to me and that opinion is embarrassingly myopic.

It's simply elitism. It's not about lack of enjoyment of reading the novel but rather dissatisfaction with the novel's perceived place in some vague literary hierarchy. It's aesthetics over substance with those people.

There's nothing "fun" about "fantasy", neither is there anything fantastical about it either. Completely divorced from human history, culture and tradition, from the human experience. Spectacle for spectacle's sake. "Authors" of fantasy only read other genreshit, superficial shadows of shadows of shadows of actual human writing, so they can only produce superficial banal feces that only a braindead child would find entertaining. Book of the New Sun is one of the few fantasies that are actual fantasies though.
