Don't be afraid to use marginalia, highlights, and whatever notes you need to grasp what is going on at any moment. And remember you can always put it down and restart another day if it feels too overwhelming. Do that for lots of doorstoppers and eventually you'll get through one.

I try to alternate longer books with several shorter books. Helps me keep up momentum to finish the doorstops.

Get a short story or novel anthology. Jack Vance Tales of the Dying Earth or an anthology of the works of HG Wells are a good place to start. I find reading large hardbacks easier and more enjoyable since large glued paperbacks are a pain in ass to keep open and breaking the spine sucks.

monte cristo is an easier read than many books a quarter of its length, non-stop kino ride from start to finish

Unintentionally, e-readers. I see the page numbers, but don't really feel like the book is particularly intimidating because it's digitized.

usually I prefer short books, I had to pause Max Weber's Economy And Society because its fucking just over 400 pages of feudal sociology

Imagine, if you will, the large and dense book you are starting is the same as a relationship you want to build. It takes time. You build upon a foundation you start and live with this new experience in your life. Take your time if that's what it takes, but get comfortable with your new relationship with the book or author.

A lot of great books are rich enough that you pretty much have to study them like the Bible if you want to get everything you can get from them. Of course, if you don't like it then don't feel the need to finish even the rest of the page you're on.

Don't be one of those faggots who decides, 'I must read x amount of books this year,' and just fucking read.

There are heaps of great books that are long. If you skip all of them then you'll be an illiterate, limp-dicked faggot of a reader.

If you've read at least the foreword to the Leviathan, you'll know that this needs no context. Hobbes keeps repeating through his famous work that if all readers do is to repeat the author's thoughts, they are just as bad as (or worse than) the ignoramus who know nothing.
It is better to read little and rumiate a lot than to read a lot and think little.
