Sup, /v/! Had these books laying around for quite a while, tell me what to read first:

1984
The Castle
Old Goriot
Of Mice and Men
Ulysses
The Man in the High Castle
The Temple of the Golden Pavilion

>> No.2020369

Start with 1984 and save Ulysses for last.
I've not read half that list but just read 1984.

If you wanted a children's book, I would suggest 1984.

Kafka is good, and if you share is absolute hatred of bureaucracy I would suggest reading the Trial as well.

I have not read Old Goriot.

Steinbeck's 2nd best work.

James Joyce was a fucking crazy ass pervert. With that said, if you feel confident enough in yourself to attempt Ulysses, go ahead.

I prefer Dick's short stories.

I don't know jack-shit about Japanese literature.

Read Of Mice and Men first.

1984 is pretty good, very accessible
Castle is good. If you have read Kafka before you know what to expect, if not, start with Metamorphosis then The Trail.
Of Mice and Men is a good little novella. You can finish it in an afternoon.
Ulysses is generally considered the greatest English language novel ever written. It is quite a hard task though, do not attempt if you are a novice.
The Man in the High Castle, decent, not a great work of literature really.

Are you trolling? If not then please explain?

And what in your opinion is his best work? EoE or The Grapes of Wrath?

Farts and messy anal most certainly do NOT "do it" for me.

>>2020409
East of Eden is number 1 in my opinion.

What I mean by calling 1984 a "children's book" is that, like most children's books, a monkey could have written it.

Read Of Mice and men first, it's short and sweet, you won't regret it. Don't even bother with reading Ulysses now, I was starting many times and still can't get halfway through it.
The Man in the High Castle is a nice and relatively short sci-fi book, alt history, Germans and Japanese won WW2, etc.
Haven't read The Castle, but I am planning to. People say that it's just as good as The Trial, if not even better!

>>2020459
Oh damn, I started reading The Temple yesterday? Is it really a bad way to start? Read about only 20 pages, could switch to Confessions of a Mask? Really want to know now what to do, do tell.

OP here, thanks for everyone's recommendations, thanks A LOT.
I'll start with Of Mice and Men then.
I thought that people are going to rage and me and tell me to GTFO or call me a troll, because most of those books are considered to be classics, but I still haven't read them.

Temple of the Golden Pavilion is Mishima in full-on "This is Japan" mode. Confessions of a Mask is Mishima in full-on "This is Mishima" mode.

Short answer is: if you're not freaked out by gay stuff, Confessions of a Mask is the easier better intro. Temple of the Golden Pavilion doesn't go into Mishima's personal sexuality---although tortured sexuality is part of the story it tells---but it's about bigger issues, and has beautiful prose.

tldr: Confessions of a Mask is easier to read but ghey

No, it isn't. The Grapes of Wrath is by far his best work. Main problem with East of Eden were its completely story irrelevant subplots/side stories (talking about Tom Hamilton, Steinbeck's mother, Joe Valery, etc, etc) and some of the main characters being ultimately left underdeveloped (Cathy - we never find out about her motives? Why did she kill her parents? Why did she hate everyone? What did she want to do in life? Why did she decide to become a whore? She was a heartless bitch, yet she killed herself because of her son, et cetera).

Of Mice and Men is his second best.

>The Grapes of Wrath is by far his best work

East of Eden is Steinbeck's magnum opus, this is pretty much a consensus among critics. Grapes is his most popular, that's because of it's timing and the John Ford movie.
