I'm also quite sure that it feeds his ego to a large extent and he isn't the same person he was when I had him as a prof. However, the problem is most of the people who criticize him (the vast VAST majority) just go after the low-hanging fruit of his public shit and act as if they're smart for seeing through him and a message that's been dumbed down specifically for mass public consumption. It's the pseud version of politics as personality--not particularly insightful or useful for anything other than showing people you're shallow and probably confuse cynicism with wisdom. It's boring and the circle jerk is even more pathetic than people who lavish praise on him for the same role you pat yourself on the back for criticising. As far as public intellectuals go we most often do far worse and the sensible thing to do is just ignore him or put him on in the background while you do household chores. Simple as.
