What are you guys currently or planning on reading?

I’ve just a read a few chapters of game of thrones and I have been captivated by it. So far, my favorite character P.O.V have been Ned, Sansa and Arya. They seem more fitting in a high fantasy series than the low-fantasy they’re in. And it’s wonderful. Also, Sansa pov is especially great with how much in denial she’s in early on with Joffrey’s behavior. Tyrion’s was okay, same goes for Jon. I dislike Catelyn’s chapters, due to her lack of long term planning.

Book of Flora, Road to Nowhere #3 - Meg Elison (2019)

Flora was the best character to me in second book, so this didn't have the problems with the protagonist I had in the second book. The frame story has returned, with a bit forty years in the future, but with the vast majority taking place immediately after the end of the second book. This one doesn't have a plot. It's literally "let's travel all over the United States in search of a community that can accept us for who we are." That was fine by me. Sexuality continues to reign supreme.

A lot certainly happens in a relatively short time in books 2 and 3. There's an antagonist, but it's irrelevant really. The characterizations are somewhat messy and inconsistent. There are also questionable decisions made as well. This is the probably least dark of three, unless of course some of the specific offensive material is especially offensive to you.

Overall, there wasn't really anything too much either way for me to strongly like or dislike. The ending was well, whatever, so if that's what Elison wanted to do, why not. It doesn't make much sense, but eh, I guess mitigating the bleakness was necessary. I have to say, this series really lived up to its title. It's unfortunate the two following books weren't anywhere as enjoyable as the first for me and it almost makes me to lower the score of the first, but I probably won't. I could've done without reading these, but it's just as well that I did.

Rating: 3/5

Is this any good?? I barely got through book 3 when it came out, and it deadened my interest in the series and the author to such an extent that I only now found out book 4 exists, I have also not read anything by him since. Is it worth reading? How is Sanderson doing in general?

Depending on whether anything comes of >>20131636 this >>20136257 may be the last book written by a woman that I'll read this month. I certainly went looking through a lot, but it didn't go as well as I'd hoped. That's not anything different from the usual though. For those who become far too concerned about it, I only have plans to read four more books by women for rest of the year, but it may become more.

My recommendation is to only read the first book, as it works perfectly fine as a standalone. The latter two form a duology that is very different from the first two and for most people, especially men, probably isn't worth reading unless you have a very keen interest in queer sexualities. I'm not going into personal details other than to say while I have an interest from a psychological standpoint, it wasn't sufficient to enjoy these for that alone.

I certainly have been reading more in the last few years than I ever thought I would. There's no real need for me to blog about why though. Yes, I am reading all of these. I've often been reading for ~7 hours a day or so. In the case of Words of Radiance, as I mentioned at the time, I finished in two days because I got up and read for basically the entire day, then I went to sleep, for two days in a row. As you can see, I don't read every day and sometimes there are gaps. This won't always be the case. Eventually I'll be doing other stuff as well that will take up a lot of time so there will be extended hiatuses. It'll still be for entertainment though, probably.

I especially enjoy short story collections with all the stories set in one setting. In those you get the benefits of short stories (variety, tight pacing, etc) but the world details aren't "wasted" from story to story. Just re-read the first two books of Vernor Vinge's Zones of Thought trilogy because I'm a slut for intelligent space opera with a huge scale, but didn't read the third and latest book (Children of the sky) because it's set back on the Tine's world of Fire Apon The Deep which was a bit to slow and political for me

Started clicking through recommended reads by authors I've never heard of and just started Eye by Tim Black last night. They're not a fantastic writer and it shows in places, but the story is pretty fun so far. It's follows the lives of residents of a suburb in Florida who are battening down the hatches for a category 5 hurricane. The eye comes right over the top of the town and stops. People go WTF and slowly reemerge to find half the town missing and surrounded by jungle with no power or radio or phone signals, the suburb is now right on the beach and the constellations are upside down

I've been looking for some dark fantasy to read and been recommend Book of the New Sun, what can I expect from this series? I've seen a bunch of reviews and people's opinions are really split on it being good or bad, especially the first book.

>> No.20137795

>>20137750
It isn't really a dark fantasy, I mean it can be moody and sort of gothic (maybe baroque is better term) but at the same time it isn't really what 'Dark Fantasy' tends to connotate in the popular vernacular either.

The primary reason people's opinions are split is because Wolfe uses lots of obscure and archaic words and religious terminology in the book, the conceit being that the book is a text from the future that has been translated and these are the closest analogues to some exotic future language. It also helps to both create the atmosphere and veil some the main character's actions.

This naturally splits people done the middle. I enjoyed it greatly, but I admit I had a copy of the Lexicon Urthus (dictionary of all the strange words used) as a companion to help me along. People feel like this stylistic approach needlessly complicates what is actually a rather simple plot, and they are absolutely correct in a very reductionist "just the narrative please" way, however that is sort of the point aesthetically and what gives the setting its Feel.

As a man, I really don't think I can understand this book. The narrator babbles about her feelings non-stop and I lose the bits of plot interspersed amidst paragraph after paragraph of "I'm scared/nervous/confused." I'm a total booklet but I honestly feel put off from female authors right now. I just wanted to scratch my vampire itch, not feel like a some chick's therapist.

Nigga, you crazy. The correct order is:

Night Winds > Darkness Weaves > Death Angel's Shadow > Bloodstone > Dark Crusade

Bloodstone has an awesome beginning and end, but that middle section is a mess and pretty dull IMO. Also you should read Wagner's Conan and Bran Mak Morn novels if you haven't already. Wagner nailed Conan's character perfectly and the story is very dark though definitely stretched out since he was hired to write a full-length novel. His Bran Mak Morn novel is similar to Bloodstone in that it's also kind of a mess and very stretched out with lots of padding, but his prose is excellent in that one and the good stuff is fantastic.

Goddammit. I don't know what is happening to me, if I am getting old or some shit o now books aren't what ithey used to be. I can't seen to find any epic fantasy book or series of books that I think is worth wasting my time with. The last one was the Elric Saga. mediocre but straight to the point and with a good ending. I really liked Percy Jackson and him defeating demigods every or so book and hated the sequel where now I had to deal with one thousand news characters fighting for screentime and don't caring about any of them at all. Why it is so hard to find somenthing about a man or boy fighting gods and demons and saving or ending the world? I don't give a shit about the King of Bullshitland being a fat retard and his wife being a squeming and strong woman or some shit and then the protagonist being a little insignificant knigth that has to serve them and for some reason ends up killing one of then and becoming the enemy of the strong and scheming princess, no, I want a protagonist with a big sword killing supernatural entities or being the Choosen One, the Human Emperor. the Eternal Champion, the Antichrist, whafuckingrever. Why every author now has the need to put innecesary, mundane conflict in a tale of two universals forces fighting for dominion over the wolrd? I DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOUR STRONG FEMALE COPROTAGONIST! I
DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOUR OTHER CAREFULLY CRAFTED ONE HUNDRED SECONDARY CHARACTERS! GO TO THE FUCKING POINT! I'm gonna not-literally kill myself if I can't find somenthing worth reading in the next few days

Eddard Stark cleaning his sword under a weirwood tree seems like an insignificant moment but it's crazy how it foreshadows weirwood magic. 4 books later Bran sees visions of people performing sacrificing sacrifices to the weirwood trees feeding the blood to the tree. This is essentially what Eddard does: he kills someone and feeds the blood to the weirwood tree by cleaning his sword beneath it and letting the blood stream down into the soil. The Starks stopped performing sacrifices to the trees yet still continued the practice indirectly.

Asoiaf really has the best magic system in fantasy.

no apologies needed.. the book IS by an academic philosopher and I suspect the audience is either a) other academic philosophers or b) folks with a strong background in philosophy

the web article I linked is a neat though experiment that might be somewhat related to what you are interested in, i.e.: we may already be living in a digital world in the sense that.. our actual brains are being stored in vats, and a computer system is sending inputs directly into our brains, such that we have the illusion that we are in a body, living our lives out-and-about in physical space. Basically The Matrix movies.

Greg Egan's Permutation City might scratch your itch as well, but that's an actual sci-fi book, and not necessarily what you had originally asked for. it's the shit, though. wonderful book. That deals more with "mind uploading", which is also a bit related

bloodstone is the greatest simply because it is the most unpolished, original and energy-filled off his full length novels. darkness weaves and dark crusade are similar in that they continue the trend of kane being a maniacal conqueror who manipulates things for himself but bloodstone (which was written first by wagner but was released after a shitty version of darkness weaves was botched by a hack publisher) does the best version with kane yojimbo manipulating both sides from the shadows. the toadmen, the ruined swamp city, the northern slightly barbarian wolf kingdom versus the medditeranean moon-worship kingdom, the opening with kane killing the bandit leader and taking it for himself, the idea of a magical ring connected to an ancient alien super conciousnes it is brimming with 60's and 70's psychedelic soul

The Kaiju Preservation Society - John Scalzi
This was a SF portal fantasy and a metafantasy. By metafantasy I mean that this was meant to be an escapist fantasy for the author, characters, and the readers who wanted to escape the COVID-19 pandemic. It's utterly filled with three elements: cultural affiliation signifiers; pop culture references; and Scalzi's brand of humor. If you don't like all of those, you're already in for an uphill trek to enjoyment. The protagonist's catchphrase was, "I lift things", which he repeats often in various ways. I'm mostly indifferent, so that certainly didn't help at all. For me those were the problem. Also I just didn't find it interesting, engaging, fun, or enjoyable. Somehow a story about literal kaiju in an alternate Earth was made to be prosaic, banal, and insipid. I felt nothing at all for any of the characters, or really anything in the book. If it weren't for that it's relatively short I wouldn't have finished. The title is very accurate though and that was part of the problem. Maybe others would like it more, the current GR ratings would suggest that, but I don't know in terms of /sffg/. I think it would've worked better in a visual medium, whether that would be a movie, TV series, graphic novel, anime or whatever else. I'm just angry and disappointed.

Imager's Intrigue, Imager Portfolio #3 - L.E. Modesitt Jr. (2010)

The first third was great, the second ok, and the third was fun. The first story arc was unfortunately far too short. The protagonist was in the same position as he was at the end of the second book, but now he had to face his deadly foe yet: a recreational superdrug that seems to be like a combination of weed, cocaine, and heroin. Worse yet, many are dying because fentanyl is being mixed into it. This was easily the greatest part for me and it made me moan at times. This couldn't have been handled better, regardless of my personal preferences.

When GRRM asked, "What was Aragorn’s tax policy?" were you at least amused by it? Well, if so, then you're in luck. There were 25 direct uses "tax" as a base word, and not a single one of them meant strenuous. An example:
>considering revising the Solidaran sales tax structure and imposing a one percent value-added tax on both the bulk sale of agricultural produce and of manufactured goods, on the grounds that the sellers of those goods were effectively exempted from the end-use sales taxes.

There was a lot that was similar. There was also discussion about ancillary water rights, land tax, the specific details of their particular form of government, and much else. I didn't enjoy it.

In what I wrote about the second book, I stated that the protagonist had some villainous tendencies, though I suppose that's only my perspective. The overall tone seemed to be "you should be grateful to those who dirty their mind, body, and soul for you, and may have irrevocably lost their humanity." Which to me, is arguable, though with considerable skepticism. I previously wrote about being co-opted by the system, but that was the wrong sort of statement. It'd would've been better to have asked what happens when someone against the system becomes the system? What then is there to rebel against or blame for failure? Well, there's other systems, parts of your own system, and yourself. It seems rather uncommon that the last of those is chosen.

Thus this trilogy came to an end, though the series continues on at a different time and place with other characters. I was concerned that both the ending and protagonist's character arc would remain unfinished. That feeling lasted until I was most of the way through. Fortunately, the resolution and epilogue provided both. However, I was conflicted about the ending because it was weak and disproportionate. I understood the rationale and I thought about what I'd think if this was done on my behalf. It's something to publicly condem and it's only human to want to avoid suffering the consequences of our own actions, even if it means that many others must suffer in our stead.

The Justice of Kings, Empire of the Wolf #1 - Richard Swan (2022)

This is a first person, linear, single POV memoir. Each chapter begins with an epigraph. Based on the cover and book's synopsis, you'd think it's about Konrad Vonvalt, a Justice in his forties, and that's correct, but not in the way implied. A Justice could be thought of as a marshal, magistrate, and inquisitor. It's their duty to seek out and prosecute lawbreakers, both in and out of the courtroom. Their sentences range from fines to summary execution without appeal. They answer only to the Emperor.

The sole POV, is nineteen year old Helena Sedanka. This is her memoir, written many decades later, as noted by the book's opening line. There's both commentary on how she feels about how she lived her life and a a few direct addresses to the reader. There are also a few instances where she tells you what's going to happen in advance. For this first book at least, the protagonist, if defined as the most important character, and the viewpoint character aren't the same.

I have mixed feeling about books that so openly wear their influences. Much about the setting is only a cosmetic change from their real world counterparts. The Sovan Empire is the Holy Roman Empire. Its banner is a two-headed wolf rather than eagle and much else is the same, including a state religion reminiscent of Christianity, though considerably more syncretic. The northerners are an amalgamation of Celts and Norsemen, more the former with its focus on Druidism. There's also a constructed language that's vaguely Eastern European. I don't know enough to assess how similar any of this is than on a superficial level though.

Only Imperial Magistrates, Justices, are allowed to learn magic, though that seems to be a matter of practice rather than capability. Every Justice can use the Emperor's Voice, which is similar to the Bene Gesserit's Voice in Dune in that allows controlling people, though it can be much more physically destructive to the environment and individuals. Aside from that a Justice almost always has one additional ability. Several are mentioned, but only a few are shown. The abilities are physically draining and may require a ritual.

The narrative is primarily about investigations and enforcing laws. It's certainly a fast paced story for the most part. This is not a story about adventure, heroics, monsters, or similar. Fights occur, but not that often. Mainly it is about sex. Sex happens often, in a very graphic detail. Overall, the purpose of this book seems to be setting the scene for the trilogy. In-universe though the purpose of this memoir seems to be to record a tale of regret for posterity so that the truth isn't lost. There are many times where the writer wishes her life had gone differently. If you're looking for a rousing tale of high adventure and sex with self-confident and assured female characters not certain of what they're doing, this is it.

I'll read the trilogy.

Seconding the 40k Cain books, you can pretty much completely ignore them being set in 40k and still enjoy them
KJ Parker's 16 ways to defend... is funny, he has comedy fantasy books under his real name but I've never tried them
For some more speculative recommendations:
A Will Eternal is funny, dunno how much it'll work without knowing the genre but it's basically "what if the protagonist of a xianxia was Mr Bean?"
Bujold isn't a comedy writer but they have lots of funny moments, the Miles Vorkosigan books have a bunch of gags that are written as such and some of the Penric books play out like farces.

The Price of Spring, Long Price Quartet #4 - Daniel Abraham (2009)

Yet again 20 more years have passed, bringing the previous protagonists into their 70s, as 60 years have passed since the prologue of the first book. The central themes for this book are grief and renewal. While there are still fantasy tropes, I was moderately surprised to see how many science fiction tropes were added in as well. Two science fiction novels in particular come to mind, though I don't know how much of an influence they were, as it may just be coincidence. I didn't mind, but for fantasy purists their inclusion may be distracting.

This book also included many more parallels to modern and contemporary events as well as what could be seen as speculation on the future. The primary social issues are the rights of women, the homogenous society, war trauma, self guilt, ethnic nationalism, immigration, and ethnic replacement. Almost everything that happens is in reaction to these.

There are new viewpoint characters, though the older generation remained active. Relationships continued to be very important, on both a personal and international level. I think this was the strongest books for characters. A few of the characters sometimes seemed to have inconsistent characterization and their motivations were questionable at times, but strongly held delusions can do that. There were some cases of this in the previous books.

The narrative is split into two opposing sides. I thought one side was clearly the correct path to follow, but by looking at the opinions of others there's substantial support for both sides. I read the correct path as a cautionary tale of a oppressed group with delusions of grandeur and a savior complex who put aside their destructive history and ignored the harm they were causing. I assume it wasn't intentional, but two of the overarching themes of this series to me has been "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" and that unwarranted kindness and mercy is destructive.

I'm not sure how I wanted the series to end, but I'm unsatisfied by how it did. It is a bleak ending, though it is definitive, which is probably for the best. Despite that I've finished the series I remain uncertain as to what series name "Long Price" refers to. I assume it means the cost that our actions from our earliest years may have on the rest of our lives. Overall, this is one of my least favorite fantasy series now.

I know this thread is cursed right now, but I've read Resenting the Hero by Moira J Moore and really liked it.
The female MC is cute in an autistic kind of way and charmingly pragmatic for most of the time and the setting was interesting, imo. It's about a world that doesn't like its human inhabitants and fights them with natural disasters, and magic-wielding pairs (kind of) of Sources and Shields need to protect the cities of them.
Dunleavy, the main character, gets paired as a shield with a source she really didn't want to get paired with and it's funny, charming, and a bit dramatic.
It's touted as romance, but so far, there wasn't any.

Ninefox Gambit, The Machineries of Empire #1 - Yoon Ha Lee (2016)

Lee is another author whose novels I came to through their short fiction. I had concerns whether the central conceit, the Calendrical system, would be sufficient to carry everything. As with her short fiction in this setting, I still don't think it really was, but that was less of an issue than I thought it would be. Many people seem to have a lot of problems understanding how it works, but I undertand it clearly. I think the source of that confusion is trying to understand this as Hard SF when it clearly isn't. If instead you approach it as "Any sufficiently advanced mysticism is indistinguishable from technology or magic" then I think it'll be more a lot more comprehensible. To me it's basically Feng Shui plus the idea that beliefs create reality. Despite this, I still wouldn't personally call it a science fantasy series, though I can understand why it could be considered as such, as it does require frequent suspension of belief if you assume it's going to be realistic in any way.

The plot is the introduction to the protagonist, the preparation for the mission, and then the rest is the mission itself, a siege on a space fortress. Lee's writing style is rather different from I'm used to reading. It's often rather spare in many ways and prefers to intently focus on what it's concerned about. The main difference though is that for the majority of the book the protagonist is physically apart from the action because their primary role is as a tactician. This leads to a lot of the frontline action being told in short bursts from a variety of characters. That being said, if you primarily read books for well-developed characters with deep emotional connection, then this probably isn't for you. The dialogue in general is utilitarian, as is really everything else, and that's intentional due to how their society functions.

The beginning is definitely the weakest part and I wasn't won over until the very end and only just barely. It mostly did so by being interesting and providing a relatively uncommon perspective that had me considering various things. If you're looking for a military science fiction/space opera series that's mostly focused on action, then this is a perfect fit. It would be easy to call this grimdark, but I don't think that'd be accurate. Often in grimdark there's an awareness and melodrama about it being grim and dark. Instead, this is very casual and indifferent to how grim and dark it is, which again, I believe to be intentional.
On a different note, Yoon Ha Lee is a transman and that definitely makes this novel worth reading. I'll read rest of the works in this setting and try some of her other work. I may even try reread this again, or not, either way.

Any other authors worth checking out if you particularly enjoyed the new sun stuff?

The Price of Spring, Long Price Quartet #4 - Daniel Abraham (2009)

Yet again 25 more years have passed, bringing the previous protagonists into their 90s, as 100 years have passed since the prologue of the first book.

I started reading Cradle because a random list on the internet said "if you like Codex Alera read Cradle". And also because I thought it was written by the guy who made Sim City and thought it would be interesting to read a fantasy series by him.

It's kinda a progression fantasy series. The main character goes from literally the single weakest guy in the empire to leading armies and battling his interstellar zerg queen daughter inside a raging tornado on top of like a volcano about to explode.

The first book especially leans very hard into established tropes you've already read before. The series twists them all by the end, but subverting a trope first requires you invoke it. The main character is a dumb farm boy living with his aunt and uncle who goes chasing after some runaway sheep and gets swept up in a grand adventure when he meets a girl from out of town.

The twist here is, the aunt and uncle are brother and sisters. They aren't married and his uncle goes off to to have adventures of his own with girl while the MC is busy doing other stuff. The evil plotting schemer who betrays the girl and sets everything into motion turns into one of the biggest bros by the end of the series. In fact, there aren't really any villains in the series by the end.
