I have finished reading The Second Sons trilogy by Jennifer Fallon, first book is The Lion of Senet.

Its interesting in that it is non-magical, and not really about battles. Its largely intrigue, plotting, and mystery. The setting is on a Twin-Sunned planet where there is no night, and primarily follows are young man who is a math prodigy that is able to calculate some astronomical phenomenon the knowledge of which threatens to undermine the state-religious power of some matriarchal cult.

I don't consider it one of the greats, but it is decent. What I do think it has going for it, that no one else I am aware of has seemed to manage, is making a fantasy series that is largely unconcerned with with legendary battles, dark lords, and apocalypses but still feels grand and sweeping in its stakes and consequences.

It depends what you think of as cringy. Personally I'd recommend just reading from the start if you really wanna get into Discworld, but the first two/three books are more straight fantasy parodies whereas the latter feel more like real-world satire through a fantasy lens, coupled with some parodies of other genres through that lens. Mort's probably a better starting point if you just wanna read a more standalone one though.

It has jokes, but they're typically more overt, constant snark rather than one-off quips. The narration and the footnotes are the major source of the amusement, whereas the characters themselves are generally fairly serious even within their absurd world. There's exceptions, of course, but people don't just become quip machines, everybody who does make jokes does it with their own sense of humour. Colour of Magic, as I said, isn't bad, but it's not really indicative of what the series really becomes. Mort is the turning point for the series, and it's largely disconnected even from the subseries it's technically part of, so it's a good read to get a grasp of how Discworld "feels".

I can appreciate this a lot. I find that a lot of comedy in stuff like this can be a complete tonal whiplash, but it sounds like Discworld does a good job at balancing the two. I'll probably give Mort a read, and if I like it I'll give Guards! Guards! a stab. Thanks, anon.

>> No.20128537

>>20128528
There's occasional observations, and some characters are definitely a little goofy even at their most serious (largely the wizards), but I find it's generally used to endear rather than to just make you laugh. You won't be poorly served by just reading the whole series in publication order if Mort does appeal, though bear in mind there's also just some really weird stuff in the first couple of books that feels incredibly inconsistent with later portrayals (two characters in particular who're basically bit-parts feel completely at odds with their established portrayals as major characters later on), but everything else is generally solid.

Got to the lore dump in Beserk where Guts gets to the witch.

It's very similar to Bakker. In Beserk there are three worlds. A Platonic word of ideas, the Logos; the actual world of humans; and the modal world of possibilities, the Astral world's of fables like trolls and elves, but also a deep astral world where ego cannot reach and fathomless entities of possibility live. In deeper but accessible realms like the Godhand and Apostles.

The astral world's ability to effect the human is based on humans' belief, as in Bakker. However, humans can't seal the astral world off because their unconscious still has access to it via archetypes (it's Jungian in this way).

So the astral world invades from time to time, and does so at the behest of the will of unseen things in the abyss. This is similar to how the ciphrang seem to work.

The Godhand were all human once, whereas the Gods of Erwa seem to be collections of human souls, warped and twisted. Both feed on the souls of the dead.

Beserk looks at causality as a set of chains. Determinism is the material world is a prison. Bakker has extremely similar themes.

In Bakker, the God's are challenged by an amoral man (more a logic driven robot) utilizing the power of the Logos. Beserk is more Nietzschean. Guts is driven by pure hatred, the will to survive, and, at times, love. So there is some difference in themes because Guts' battle is two fold, against Causality (represented by the Godhand) and against his drive, mostly in the form of hatred, swallowing up all he loves (the Black Beast).

The aesthetics are also incredibly similar.

Do we think Bakker read Beserk? I know Beserk has its own influences. The Thirty Years War, Durer for the art, Nietzsche, Jung, Japanese folklore, Platonism, and seemingly in many places, the Evil Dead movies.

Also, anything else like these two? I've found I don't like most manga or fantasy, but I love these two.

Durer for example.

Anyhow, they both work great as myths showing the struggle against Causality. Unfortunately, I think their answers are both wrong. Human will can't overcome causality. Neither can man's share in the Logos.

It's as Paul says in Romans 7, we are in a war with our desires, instincts, and lack of knowledge. We are saved from this by the Logos, yet not the small light burning in man, but by the Logos itself in Christ. We die a death of personhood in Sin, and are ressurected to freedom in Christ.

Christ drives out the Legion within, sending them into the swine. We see the self destructive nature of the Legion in how the swine run off the hill.

However, since both works are incomplete and neither Guys or Khellus succeed, they both work as guiding to this insight.

>grimness, epicness, philosophy, size, and deepness
if those are your metrics you might as well just read worm
grimness: nothing good ever happens to anyone, it's pure misery the whole way through, anything that seems good is later revealed to have actually made things worse
epicness: neverending threat escalation ensures that a story that starts at the "oh fuck, is that a knife?" level has people shitting entire parallel universes out of their asses by like the 2/3 mark
philosophy: apparently the guiding principle of prince of nothing is rationalism so you'd probably feel right at home in a book that is 90% comprised of a first person narrative from a character that thinks like a gender-swapped /r9k/ poster and who makes exactly one attempt at humour over the course of the entire story
size: if it was made into a standard paperback it would be nearly 4000 pages long
deepness: the whole thing is basically just a character study exploring the circuitous, self-justifying thought processes of a single intensely dislikable person for over 1 million words

>nothing good ever happens to anyone, it's pure misery the whole way through
There is a difference between displaying grimdark to depict a point, and just throwing in some edgy shit for no reason at all.

>neverending threat escalation
escalates beyond the level of suspending disbelief. Dumb superhero-teenagers against an alien multi-dimensional being that can foresee all your actions? This is beyond retarded.

>apparently the guiding principle of prince of nothing is rationalism
The guiding principle of the 'Prince of Nothing' is witnessing the heuristic collapse of all your intuitions. You cannot know *how* you know, and thus it is forever your blindspot to be exploited.
The most illustrating moment is in "The Thousand-Fold Thought", when Cnaiur weeps: "They walk among us as we walk among dogs, and we yowl when they throw out scraps, we whine and whimper when they raise their hands...*They make us love! They make us love!*"

'Worm', on the other hand, COULD HAVE exploited some Semantic Apocalypse themes - it has interestingly problematic *situations* - but instead we have friendly very human-like AI with human intentions; an incomprehensible eldritch aliens that, however, are led into human-like depression; a dumb teenager that withstands brain-rewriting through sheer anger and free will; and other disappointingly mediocre shit.

>deepness

I've nearly completed book of the new sun and I'm very impressed. Assuming that this is among the peak of what fantasy can offer, where do I go from here for quality? From what I've gathered, Bakker seems a good candidate but I'm not sure where to start

There is nothing that comes even remotely close to Gene Wolfe. The best you can do is to simply read everything written by him and then read it again. New Sun, Long Sun, Short Sun, Wizard Knight, Latro, Peace, etc. Many (if not most) of his short stories are absurdly good too. Even though I really enjoyed reading Bakker‘s Second Apocalypse series I would never compare him to Gene Wolfe and any of his works. It just doesn’t make sense.
