>Sunset found her squatting in the grass, groaning. Every stool was looser than the one before, and smelled fouler. By the time the moon came up she was shitting brown water. The more she drank, the more she shat, but the more she shat, the thirstier she grew, and her thirst sent her crawling to the stream to suck up more water. When she closed her eyes at last, Dany did not know whether she would be strong enough to open them again.

The Poppy War, The Poppy War #1 - R.F. Kuang (2018)

Once again I have chosen a limited edition cover because I feel that it's far more accurate to what a reader ought to expect from the book. I would describe this as grimdark, young adult, alternate universe, wish fulfillment, with superhumans that behave badly. The first half of the novel is about getting into a military school and her school life. The second half is special forces and war. At first I thought I'd be able tolerate its particular sort of worldbuilding, which I'd say could be charitably described as an inchoate mishmash. I was wrong. This book at times openly transposes Chinese history and mythological works while also mixing it with fantastical elements. It's just very strange to me how it's presented. I found it to be very heavy-handed and jarring. It also feels like a secondary world and Earth combined. Apparently this was also of great appeal to a large number though, judging by its nominations, awards, and how much it sold. I can understand how being ignorant could be beneficial to one's enjoyment of this, but I don't understand how being knowledgeable would be. That requires a mindset rather different than my own as far as I can tell.

Now for some unwarranted personal speculation. From a quick look at a few interviews and what's she written about it, Kuang wrote this mostly while she was a teenager and as a response to what she had been learning as a Chinese studies major, and in reaction to her family. I think it's clear that this book was a product of special circumstances and quite possibly could've only been written by her exactly when it was. I believe that's also the majority of its appeal. If nothing else it contains emotional resonance and untempered anger at injustice and unfairness. There's a certain appealing purity in naivete that doesn't consider context or restrain its outrage. It's what I expect from a highly intelligent teenager/young adult at a prestigious university deeply immersed in their studies writing a book that in some ways is a journal of their experience reconciling what they've recently learned of the world and their place in it. I wouldn't be surprised if Kuang felt very differently about this trilogy later in life. Not so much in a negative way as a different kind of appreciation.

Her next work, she isn't a fulltime novelist, will almost certainly be far less commercially successful, though better written, by which I mean more coherent and consistent. That's the hope anyway. Although I won't be continuing this series, though I did read summaries of the trilogy, I will give her future work outside of this setting a try.
Rating: 2/5

Do you know how many new and great fantasy books get published every single year? It's actually zero. So if you want to read in the genre, you read trash whether or not you respect the author. That's how genres work and survive. If they don't have enough appeal to carry mediocre writers, the genre will die.

They said she went to pray for her first husband, her true husband, who had been lost at sea when she was a girl no older than Lanna. "She thinks that if she finds the right god, maybe he will send the winds and blow her old love back to her," said one-eyed Yna, who had known her longest, "but I pray it never happens. Her love is dead, I could taste that in her blood. If he ever should come back to her, it will be a corpse."

I mean, that's what I said. A Dream Of Spring is supposed to be the final installment and even Martin himself is on the record that he hasn't written a single word for it and that he will only start working on it after he's finished Winds. IF he finishes Winds against the odds, he'll have pretty much run out of lifetime and won't be able to complete Dream even if he wanted to.

So we won't see Martin's take on the ending, no matter what. But it's at least possible that the sight of Dany shitting brown water won't be the last we ever saw of her.

Come to chinkshit for the genocidal protagonists, stay for the self-help
>Fang Yuan looked at the street outside the alley and pointed at the passing crowd: “Take a look now, these people don’t want to inspect your true self and who Xia Lin truly is. When we were dancing and singing, they also did not want to know our names. They are only expressing their attitude, the true situation is not important to them. Ordinary people chase after the truth because they are usually angry and indignant about being made a fool of.”
>“So to them, we are not important at all, and to us, their attitude should similarly not be important.”
>Xia Lin took a deep breath: “Master Chu, thank you for comforting me, I truly can’t thank you enough…”
>“I have not finished speaking. Since the attitude of outsiders is not important, what is truly important in our lives?” Fang Yuan asked with a smile.
>Xia Lin was stunned for the third time: “Master, forgive my ignorance…”
>Fang Yuan pointed at Xia Lin and then pointed at himself: “It is us, ourselves. It is our truest feelings. Ask yourself, listen to the voice in the depths of your heart. What do you want to do, what kind of person you want to become, where do you want to go? You will obtain the answer in the depths of your heart.”
>“If you want to travel, then travel around the world. If you want to treat others well, then treat them properly. If you want to attempt flying, then collect money and resources to purchase and practice flying Gu worms.”
>Fang Yuan pointed at the alley then at the street: “If you want to remain in the alley, you can stay. If you want to walk into the street and enjoy the event with others, then walk out. Don’t mistreat your own feelings because of their attitude. If you mistreat yourself frequently, then you will end up with regrets, you will constantly wear a mask to act as another person, you will no longer be yourself.”

Back on Earth, there was no choice, as everyone was going to die eventually, thus they can only pursue these or life would be meaningless. But in this world, where primeval essence is rich, why would we not pursue immortality given the possibility?"

I recently read this, and enjoyed it. The story follows Hank, who is basically a semi-professional mediator between criminals on a dinky space station in the ass end of nowhere, a job he got because he is a mutant, and his particular mutations make him absurdly hard to kill by normal human standards. That is helpful when the negotiations go bad.
Mutants are fairly common in this setting, the galactic empire the protagonists are part of intentionally causes them, because they simply aren't the biggest kid on the block and the easiest way to clear out a settled species and steal their planets is good old fashioned biological warfare, ergo, they deliberately induce potentially beneficial mutations to make the population more resistant to biowarfare.
This is important in another sense, because mutants are classified based on their mutations, levels one through ten. Hank is a 4, where a 1 would be minor physical changes, and 10 is literally able to warp reality.

Things start going bad when the station chief changes Hank's classification to rank 10. Why? Because they get more government funding for higher level mutants, and "nobody reads those reports anyway". This draws the attention of aliens, which then draws the attention of the military.
And all of this is secondary to the actual plot of this book: The military is coming, and they are going to Audit us.
Most of this book is about a bunch of crooks attempting to turn their hive of scum and villainy into a perfect little Potemkin village, and I enjoyed it. 6/10.

You forget that ASoIaF is not dead quite yet. It was too big of a popculture phenomenon and all the normalfags watched the show. Which means the potential audience for ASoIaF bandwagon podcasts is roughly a million times higher than for any other fantasy series you can think of, short of LotR. The HBO prequel series is slated for this year too, bringing ASoIaF back into public awareness. Who knows, maybe it'll somehow manage to redeem the brand in the eyes of the normalfags like the Mandalorian did for Star Wars.

That all said I doubt ASoIaF will remain culturally relevant after Martin's looming demise, since he'll leave behind a bungled legacy. New generations won't want to read an unfinished work and they won't want to watch a show infamous for its shit conclusion either. So whatever remains of the fanbase will go extinct sooner rather than later. Although I suppose we might have to wait and see how Martin's last will looks like. If some corporation inherits the IP, ASoIaF might actually shuffle forward as a zombie for years or decades to come.

Finished Fires of Heaven last night. Overall 3/5 in enjoyment, a slight dip from The Shadow Rising which I actually liked less than the first three books. Jordan keeps with his glacial pacing, making the story feel like a fantasy slice-of-life until the last couple of chapters when plot development finally happens. Nynaeve reaches new levels of insufferable in this book.

>mfw reading the circus subplot

I'm still decently engaged with Mat's and Rand's chapters (Perrin is okay, I guess) so I'll keep reading.

I don't actually mind the slow pacing that much as long as I'm reading about characters I like. It only really gets tiring when I'm reading 5-10 chapters in a row about white tower politics or Nynaeve and Ewgene doing something that feels at best tangentially related to the main story.

I've also heard about the slog and I think I can pace myself, but we'll see...

The slog boogeyman isn't that bad, really. Plenty happens in the first three of those books. It just isn't what readers wanted since Rand takes a bit of a backseat so Jordan could flesh out other characters a little more. The only real dud is the fourth of those books, book 10, in which literally nothing happens because it takes place partly concurrently to book 9. But if you're reading primarily for Rand (which you probably are, because who isn't?), then you will likely feel let down by those four books as a whole.

However, I contend that book 9 is fucking kino and that anyone who calls book 9 a slog can choke and die.

Nice. Good to see the Jannies doing their jobs. Hopefully, we won't have to deal with the shitter for three days.

It could be worse. I know a general on a different board where a crazed OP has been making the thread and having it being deleted and probably banned as well every day for months. He had been making it for years prior to that, though it also existed several years before that as well.

Before opening this site you should have adblock, noscript, or something anyway to disable stuff or else it'll be a problem.

We’ve been like this for over a year now. Things are changing, but that spamming faggot has no life.

If a guy has been making a thread for years then stubbornly continuing to do so isn't crazy, it's sensible.
What's crazy is whatever faggot janny decided to make a problem of it after years of regular posting.

There's a greater context, same as when there were competing /sffg/ threads.

It was just shitposters bring shitposters though.

Either way, it's not something I'm interested in arguing, so that's all I have to say on the matter.

Should a new thread be made on page 6 or 7?

Whatever the spirit of the thread works on your heart is the correct choice.

The only reason I’m asking is to avoid someone making two threads or having a shitter make a fake thread.

I’d recommend Kull if you haven’t read him as well. Besides that, I found the Red Sonja books very comfy even if they don’t exactly reach the level of Howard in terms of prose.
