Check Rebellion in the Backlands by Euclides da Cunha. It's extremely unique, like a scientific paper discussing every aspect of a conflict.
This book alone is enough to put the author together with colossi like Borges, Marquez, Tolstoy and others.

Graciliano Ramos has a very interesting style and subject matters. Machado de Assis is very imaginative, probably the best brazilian writer in history.

The more I think about it, the more I feel that Brazilian literature has no comparison with other Western literature. It is as important as Portuguese literature.
