Atwood's dystopia is the average liberal's most secret fantasy. The appeal of The Handmaid's Tale is that the reader can enjoy the oppression of women, under the guise of being a revolutionary. The irony is that nowhere does Atwood tell you how to overthrow these supposedly oppressive powers; her books are essentially a supercut of misogynistic porn, differing only in the social acceptability they gain from being nominally revolutionary. The feminist view of criminalization of abortion as a means of oppressing women ironically removes even the most basic agency from women. The debate has an underlying assumption that women are incapable of managing the biological reality that their bodies are meant to have children with contraceptives or limiting how much sexs they have, and that demands on women to not have unwanted children are a priori oppressive and unreasonable. With little middle ground between religious types against abortion and feminist types for it, it makes sense abortion was legalized in the US via supreme court diktat.
