once you read alot of norse myth, anglo saxon manuscripts, catholic theology and spent time looking at catholic artwork you realize he mostly drew from older source material and rearranged and reinterpreted things. not to take away from his creativity but most of everything in middle earth can be traced to something in real history or mythology

Believe it or not, Anon, some people actually can imagine incredible things.

Now, as >>20021387 says, Tolkien drew a lot from his upbringing and the subjects of his scholarship. But even so, the things he created OUT of them were extraordinary, and a sign that his imagination was truly gigantic.

As a matter of fact, some people just flat-out have better imaginations than other people, and can imagine and bring to life whole new worlds full of new ideas, new people, new concepts, and new thoughts. Imagination is talent, and some people have more of it than others.
