It is decent but not great. Groton buries a lot of important information in footnotes and one-line mentions deep in paragraphs. It's what i used in college and did the job but looking back there are others that would have been better. Mastronarde's Introduction to Attic Greek is much better overall though it also suffers from the lack of example sentences and readings.

I like it. Wheelock worked for me so I wanted a similar approach, and it definitely delivers on that. But just like the other anon said, make sure you read the little notes. Be careful about the supplemental exercises book though, there are some mistakes in there.

I have also had the pleasure of knowing Groton IRL, and she's a pretty awesome person who's student-focused and, unlike so many modern "muh power structure" academics, truly believes in the beauty and value of ancient Greek and Latin. So if the character of the person who wrote it happens to be a consideration for you, I can give it a glowing recommendation on that front.

Can someone explain how diphthongs and hiati works in Latin? They seem to follow opposed rules to which are encountered in Romance languages.
I'm an Italian and Spanish speakers, and while I'm able to pronounce ae or oe as a diphthong, for me is practically impossible to pronounce io in two separates syllables (it's always a diphthong in Spanish and Italian unless the word's accents falls on the first vowel).

There are only 6 regular diphthongs in Latin
>ae, au, ei, eu, oe, ui
though ui is only a diphthong in a few regular words, e.g. huic
All other vowel combinations are usually separately pronounced.

>All other vowel combinations are usually separately pronounced.

That's the issue, for an Italian or a Spaniard is almost impossible and totally unnatural to pronounce io in two separates syllables.
I don't even can imagine how is it possible to pronounce them in two distinct syllables while speaking fluently.
In my languages, a closed vowel (i, u) + an open vowel (a, e, o) will be always a diphthong unless the closed vowel is accentuated and pronounced in the first place.

Sumerian, Akkadian, and Babylonian are all very close to eachother. Compare the locations of the Sumerian city of Ur to the Akkadian Akkad, to the Babylonian Babylon. the three civilizations together are called 'mesopotamia' and share a lot of culture, but they are all different empires.

the main difference is in the language. Sumerian is its own weird language similar to finnish, its not related to any other european or semitic language. Akkadian and Babylonian are very similar and both semitic languages, so also very similar in its words to hebrew, arabic, egyptian, and modern day iranian.

Probably Arabic. I mean it's hardly ever discussed around here, I guess because of association with Islam, but it has a massive corpus and was the Latin of MENA and south/central Asia for over a millenium. Plus it's so satisfyingly close to proto-Semitic.
