The vaccines work. Are they perfect? No. Are all those pharmaceutical companies staffed by absolute psychopaths who wouldn't care if they killed thousands of people as long as they could get away with it and keep their millions? Yes. Every company is like this. That's capitalism. But at the end of the day, we have tonnes of evidence that shows that the benefits outweigh the risks. In this specific case, it really is that simple.

That said, I see the anti-vaxx stuff as an expression of a wider dissatisfaction with the soft authoritarianism of expertise. Hyper specialization is the name of the game in modern society. No individual can ever hope to understand the world, and in place of an organic community to help us we have impersonal bureucracies, all manner of "experts" and thousands upon thousands of products all of which create a cacophony of contradictory nonsense. The impulse to tell all these people to shove their forms, studies, apps, books, and whatnot up their fucking asses is perfectly natural.

I understand wanting to be one's own doctor and digging through the internet for cures or preferring something like a homeopathic remedy or prayer over normal medicine, but unfortunately that's just delusional.
