Was Tolstoy right about warfare? Does it victory or defeat just come down to luck?

What did they disagree about? I've read both and they seem pretty similar, ideologically.

One general can't win a war. The South had Lee and Jackson but they still lost the Civil War.

This is cope losers use to justify their defeat. Tolstoy had a very romantic view of the Russian victory over Napoleon. He thought Russia was able to defeat France through a combination of luck and indominable spirit. This can be seen in War and Peace. While morale and fortune play a role, the truth is that Russia's military victory against Napoleon was a carefully crafted and planned victory. Russian generals meticulously and intelligently defeated France by cutting off supply lines and playing to their own geographic advantage. Tolstoy downplayed the strategy because he wanted to craft a more mythological and emotional cause of Russia's victory.

war is about state power and every state seeks its own benefit

another major reason for napoleon's defeat was because he completely forgot how to war and sat in the capital for a month doing nothing while his army was withering away

I felt it was the opposite. The Russians are constantly back-stabbing each other and the only reason Napoleon loses is because he is stupid, not because the Russians are competent.
