This book temporarily killed my love of reading and sent me spiraling into a reading slump that lasted two months. I finished Parts One and Two. Then I put it on hold until I could muster up the courage to pick it up again, about four months later. Then I wanted to finish it by the end of 2018, and failed.

These characters are such high school drama. They’re storming with jealousy, bitter, angry, infatuated, obsessed, crying, fainting, lying, murdering, stealing, begging, drinking, scoffing. Then feigning indifference. Then doing it all over again. All within the span of a page. It’s nuts.

I couldn't take any of it seriously. Besides a couple of interesting speeches from Ivan, reading this was dull drudgery (as a former English major I feel compelled to find some sort of redeeming quality from a classic). I was annoyed at or bored with all of the characters, and the writing and plot were not good enough to keep me engaged. At the end of this, I simply feel saddened upon realizing that Russian lit is not for me.

I found a quote that I think sums up the author’s attitude toward his characters:

“But in some cases it is really more creditable to be carried away by an emotion, however unreasonable, which springs from a great love, than to be unmoved.”

It's amazing how Tchaikovsky is the same in music. Really over the top sentimentality but it draws you in.

Yeah, it’s time for purely human dialogue.

Holy based

i never understood it as there being a lot of fucking, just a lot of drama around romance. katarina and dmitri surely fucked and grušenjka wasn't a virgin but other than that? idk. there were more important things going on for nobility in those times. the whole charade before fucking with the actual fucking never happening. maybe i feel that way because i am similar, i often rejected fucking but couldn't sort out my feelings and desires. and i'm slavic as well.

surely you’re not basing this on one single dostoslog, without at least trying tolstoy, gogol, pushkin, bely, platonov, bulgakov, nabokov, etc

Being a virgin is not an excuse for using some retarded factory style coupling model for people. They are not simple dolls you see in porn.

Don't give up on Russian lit just cause of Dosto, a lot of people hate Dosto but love Tolstoy and the rest, including Tolstoy himself. And Norm MacDonald who had the great line "I like the Russians a lot. Not dosteovsky, but the actually good ones."

>Well, to say that Tolstoy Gogol and Dostovesky are the great novelists from Russia would be akin to say that William Faulkner, Mark Twain and Harold Robbins are the great American writers.
