Do you force yourself to finish a book you don't enjoy?

>> No.19964062

>>19964058
God, yes. In fact sometimes I don't even finish books I do enjoy.

>> No.19964069

No. I don't feel "guilty" about it either.

Do you accidentally happen upon gay porn and tell yourself "Oopsie I already have my hands on my cock better watch this and ejaculate to it - it's fine if I say grace and no homo afterward"?

>> No.19964083

>>19964058
Depends, usually just finish them. If I have finished plenty of books recently and I'm not enjoying or understanding what I am currently reading I have no problem dropping it completely or putting it aside for the future

>> No.19964086

>>19964058
No, but I have once or twice.

>> No.19964098

if it's a short novella, yes. if it's a long book, fuck it, drop it asap, even if it's a world renowned classic.

>> No.19964413

I dont think Ive ever truly enjoyed reading. Its just something I did on occasion due to constraints and boredom. I deleted or trashed all my books, and I invite you to do the same.

This is why you read. To enjoy. Because you don't read literature, you consume it.

You have to. You can't form an opinion without reading the whole thing. Maybe it gets better later on, then you'd feel like an asshole for dismissing the 10 pages of brilliance just because the first 250 were utter dreck.

If it feels like a chapter or lesson that I need to work through to get to something else, I'll power through it. If I see value in where I am in my present state (emotionally/psychologically/educationally, depending on the content and context), I'll set dislike aside to give it a chance.

But there have been books where I could tell that I was just not in the right headspace or season of life to receive something from the experience (or the book was outright bad), so I would abandon the effort.

Like >>19964069 says, don't feel guilty about it. If it isn't right for you in that time, then you are doing yourself a favor to quit it. Life is only so long, and there is so much out there to absorb and learn from and appreciate.
