Can someone give me the rundown on this guy and whether or not he’s worth reading? Is Mistborn or Way of Kings any good? Or is it just schlock genre fiction?

>> No.19921408

>>19921377
I enjoyed Mistborn, and you can just read the first book and stop if you don't want to commit to a series.

>> No.19921417

He basically writes shounen manga. Make of that what you will.

>> No.19921419

Mistborn is pretty schlocky and entirely devoted to explaining the magic system. It's like a videogame manual with a narrative.

I gave it a shot because a couple of my friends got in to his books and Mistborn really turned me off from wanting to bother with anything else of his.

I'm not a huge fantasy fan in the first place though, so take that as you will.

>> No.19921448

He's OK, start with warbreaker into way of kings, the first Mistborn trilogy is by far the worst books of his(those characters oof, but the plots have their moments I guess) but is needed for general world building and the second Mistborn trilogy is kino.

>> No.19921502

>>19921448
I think first Mistborn was nice but its the only thing I read from him, maybe because its the one I was interested in the most so I started with it.

He's the literary equivalent of diving into a restaurant's dumpster when you're hungry. Lots of stuff, all shit.

He writes at an absurd pace because his style is shit, his characters are shit, his plots are shit, his "le epic magic systems" are shit, etc.

Sanderson's style is simplistic to the point of being a slog to read. I didn't think it was possible.

I read two Mistborn books in a couple of days when the Internet in my area was down, but when it came back up I couldn't read the third one past 100 pages. And the way of kings is just exceptionally boring, read 400 pages and dropped it.
He can create interesting worlds and plots and characters that sound cool in theory, but the actual books mostly feel lifeless and bleak.

Good at making up universes, as in he'll provide you with some decent reasons why these universes are how they are. Similarly, good at structuring a plot, as in he'll plant enough causes for the ultimate consequences to make sense. So, he's mechanically good, I guess, but in a Hollywood sense: he focuses on thrills, intrigue, and a shocker at the end, not on building something organical.
Terrible at: writing characters, they all feel like self-absorbed teenagers and act /talk like such; writing in general, his prose is amongst the poorest I've read, and that's saying something when you're, like me, an avid fantasy reader.

I gave Way of Kings a shot. The characters are cliche and 2-dimensional, the dialogue is downright shocking, the prose is bland, the writing is frequently technically incompotent and the world-building (for which he gets a bizarre amount of praise) is incoherent, souless and conveyed very poorly. The books are also painfully fucking long and almost nothing of real significance happens until the end where he realises he needs things to happen and scrambles to fix it (lapdog fanboys think this is stylistic choice and call it the Sanderlanch lol)

But the most unforgivable thing is just how souless everything is. Maybe its just not for me, but there's no spirit, no meaning behind any of it, just mary sue action and a string of scenarios way beyond the talent of this bland, bland author. I like pulp and even shonen for what they are, but sanderson can't deliver even them, let alone an "epic" fantasy. disappointing, he seems like a nice enough guy
