19902668 No.19902668 [Reply] [Original]

Just finished up Book of the New Sun. Wow. It was so good that I found myself reading and listening to analysis after every chapter. This was the first work of Gene Wolfe I’ve read.

What should I read next? I was thinking Fifth Head of Cerberus.

Urth of the New Sun if you haven't read that, or Book of the Long Sun

>> No.19902681

Read The Fifth Head of Cerberus, and then read Urth of the New Sun. Urth is very good, but if you read it immediately after BOTNS you'll get whiplash from the stylistic and tonal differences. Same goes for Book of the Long Sun, which is a separate story set in the same universe rather than a direct sequel. Suspending judgment on Short Sun because I haven't finished reading it.

Urth is the obvious choice. I'd also highly recommend The Wizard Knight.

I stopped reading after the Claw of the Conciliator because I was so intensely disgusted by the consumption of Thecla's flesh. It seemed like Severian was cucking and in the most disgusting way too, although of course I'm biased because cannibalism is a phobia of mine. Anyone have any takes on this? Is it worth reading past that point?

Yes, very much so. I've heard the consumption of her flesh being compared to a false Eucharist alas it's definitely a disturbing and evil thing that occured there. Something similar but less evil in nature is going to occur later on, so consider yourself warned, I guess.

I felt like Long Sun was a very long prelude to Short Sun. Though I'm a midwit so maybe there are things that I should have appreciated from Long Sun on its own, which I did not.

I just finished it myself last month, really loved it too. I’m reading Fifth Head of Cerberus now and liking it a lot, think it’s a good place to go next.

I liked it. Silk was a very compelling character and the problem of evil stuff was great. The only thing I didn't like was how the ending felt rushed, but Short Sun picks up the story almost immediately afterwards.

Alright, I’ll give it some more then. It just so severely disgusted my sensibilities, the woman of his ultimate compassion literally being eaten in front of him by a gang of cannibals just to get a little memory “high”, the enjoyment of the consumption of her soul in such a foul way. It actually made me feel ill and put the book down in disgust and frustration. I wanted Severian to use Terminus Est to deal away with them right then and there. I’m trusting you anon.

It's okay because despite being a bit of a faget Severian was in fact Christ so dead Thecla got transformed to living Thecla within him, and they lived happily ever after and also before (subsequent to a few more adventures)

I'd say more of the latter. They generally go through the events of a chapter, and what they could mean. For some reason they try to avoid spoilers, even though they have both read the books several times. If you want a dryer version of the same, you could try Rereading Wolfe, which is more academic and includes occasional interviews. Here they go in with the assumption that you've already read and understood the whole BotNS.
There's also the Gene Wolfe Literary Podcast, but they are going through Wolfe's works chronologically and are currently at Peace.
