I hate funko pops, but one time I went with my friend to gamestop because they wanted to buy a game, and I found a little daredevil (one of the really small ones from the advent calender) for a dollar so I bought it, because I'm team red, but now my autism kicked in, and now I need to get the spiderman and deadpool versions, but the figures are expensive, and I'd rather die than buy the advent calender, and there isn't even a deadpool version, so I'm fucked. Oh the copy of The Magus was my Father's. He bought and read it in the 70's and gave it to me for a gift and I really liked it. The cover is very cool.

Also, I'm not a huge fan of Sally Rooney. I 'like' her books. Sometimes I get tired of reading dense classics and she's a fun light read that still gets through to me.

What do you think about Wordsworth's edition of War and Peace? Would you recommend it? It's super cheap, I want to buy it.

I haven't read War and Peace but judging from leafing through it, the print is crisp and it feels nice. Judging by the other Wordsworth's, it will not crease either, which can be both a good thing and a slightly unsatisfying thing. On the whole, 2.90$ is a no-brainer for me.

Ive already read a lot of Welty and gonna continue more Gothic including Wuthering Heights too. I saw it recommended by /lit/ but I bumped it up the list because Welty referenced it as great in an essay. Same reason I prioritized Chekhov.

I honestly didn't like The Optimists Daughter by Welty too much. I think it might be because I'm not from the South, but I found the dialogue hard to follow and sometimes weird and disjointed. The scenes were too crowded; I think the McKelva family could have been just one or two. There is no way Welty could have fleshed all of them out enough to each be valuable in their own right and they were all pretty much the same anyway. If it was just Fay's mother and one sister who spoke I think it would have read better. And some things just didn't make sense as well- not in an uncanny gothic way- just an awkward and odd way. The part with the maintenance guy and the bird felt very weird; not that I am a great authority on social conventions, but I don't think people don't normally act like that.

I'm honestly not sure how much I understand Southern culture and I wonder if parts of its literature are lost on me. But then again I don't know if there is any other way you can learn about a culture than visiting and I won't be able to anytime soon. And then again I imagine the modern South to be unrecognisable from the 40's.

Would you recommend I read more Welty? I'm willing to give her another chance I think.

If you havent read her short stories and essays try those. I think she is better in the short form. The Petrified Man and the Wide Net are good, also the Key is interesting. Welty didnt consider herself Gothic, I was mainly referring to Brontë.

The South is still the same in many places. In Southern speech the main thing you gotta understand is that they speak with tact and dunk on people with hospitality as a form of social dominance. They will not outright say something unpleasant unless theyre "trash". That term mostly refers to uncultured people without manners. For example in Lily Daw the home for the mentally ill is called "feeble minded." Some people still say that. They also say "curious" as in curiosity insteas of "freak."
