For most female authors if you take the name off the front cover you can't tell which gender it was written by. Rooney herself is a very feminine writer, just going by subject matter and characters, so it is pretty noticeable with her; but others like Austen, Bronte and Eliot, there is no way to tell who wrote them. There are little subtleties I've appreciated but they're overshadowed by how cliched the developing (and described) relationships between the characters have been. It's very easy to visualize Rooney's prose and that has a positive effect on tone--but so far things are just monotonously building to a foreseeable dynamic. Rooney also namedropped Baudrillard for no real reason and had Frances put on Van Morrison--if this is a pattern and she's just going to ape resonance via superficial allusions like these, I get why midwits are attracted to her writing.

And if you read her other books you do see pretty much the same characters popping up. Nick could be an alternate version of Felix, Simon and Connell from all her other books.
