if i recall, the first 1/3 or so seemed really fascinating --> WW1-style trench warfare, flamethrowers, major retreats/defeats of the ostensible "good" side, mystic prophet, etc.

but then it falls apart with lame/unrealistic love interests, antagonists you can see plotting a mile away, and an underwhelming finale. the last 2 books of the series were semi-interesting, but it got pretty boring and felt like most of it could have been wrapped up in book 2.

fine, not-so-generic YA, not really worth much once you move past that level

idk why i read this it was kinda boring and not very good and every question and mystery set up over the course of the book just gets exposition dumped onto you on the last 3 pages.
