Weak female characters are definitely a detraction from the book. The rape isn't even about gender politics really, it's about instinct and sex and violence ruining on the same circuit. Hence the Inchori and their monsters are all rape happy, and don't care about which gender their victim is. Same for the effects of the Meat. Kellhus rapes everyone he fucks since they can't consent under his thrall and it's not just women. Cnauir rapes a dude too.

It's a point about desire and sin I think. But it's also over the top at times. Like the whole plot of maybe Cnauir is going to be taken out gaurding the captives and he figures the plot out, and moves against it was good, but having it end in him dragging of the leader to go butt fuck him? Over the top.

I like the books a lot, but at this point I wouldn't be surprised if the climax is Kellhus raping Ajokli as he posseses Cnauir in order to show dominance over the Hundred once and for all.

It's a fantastic series. It's not particularly deep or literary, and it shines because of this. It's fast paced action with an interesting cast and setting and a steady drumbeat of plot twists that keep you guessing, usually without them coming off as hackneyed ass pulls (some so though, the climax of the first trilogy was a little goofy).

Second book is possibly my favorite. The editor dropped the plan of marketing it as semi-YA and the implausible premise plays less of a role. Third book is great too. Fourth book is a new series 10 years later with new POV characters and has trouble getting going. Fifth book might also be the best though.

The Second Apocalypse (Bakker's Magnum Opus) is a tremendously refreshing well-written masterpiece. I couldn't give you enough adjectives to make it justice.
He also happens to be one of the best contemporary fantasy authors. Arguably the best living ones, in my humble opinion.
Just ignore the memes, people get out of control when Bakker is mentioned. On both sides, I might add. Still worth checking out for yourself, regardless.

Just finished the Powder Mage trilogy. The flintlock fantasy setting was great and I loved the plot but I felt the characters suffered from the POV constantly changing so often and I really didn't care for any of them until the end, which was stellar. Overall it was okay, 5/5, good enough for me to pick up the sequel trilogy in a few days.
