Is House of Leaves the height of Joycean/Postmodern literature?

>> No.19875583

Bump.

>> No.19875623

It really is not and has little to do with Joyce or postmodernism. If you want something like House of Leaves which does draw on Joyce and postmodernism then try The Tunnel. Danielewki was almost certainly heavily influenced by it.

Ultimately everything he does was something Gass did in The Tunnel, he just takes it all to the extreme and moves the internal horror more external. Gass has major influence from Joyce and while not really being a post modernist has more in common with it than Danielewski. It is fairly impressive how much House of Leaves draws upon The Tunnel, he must have completely reworked the novel in a very short amount of time.

What the ever-loving fuck is Joycean about it? You have no clue what you're talking about, you're just typing words.

He is just saying that he did not understand it, no reason to be rude.

Could I read an ebook of house of leaves or do I need a physical book to get the proper effect?

The formatting mostly serves to distract the reader from the books flaws.

Okay yes you're very intelligent and cultured for not liking this book I haven't read but could you please answer my question?

>> No.19875879

>>19875831
I did answer the question, and I never said I did not like it. I enjoyed it. Many people claim the experience of reading it is vital, having to deal with the formatting, and I would agree on that too the extent that having to think about such things makes it more difficult to think to closely about the book itself. This forces a sort passive consumption, which is interesting in of itself but his overuse of formatting tricks means you get used to them and by the halfway point it is no different to read than a normal book and the flows start to become more apparent unless you are well caught up in the story.

The physical book is pretty much required. Lots of flipping back and forth between pages.

its lame even with the physical copy, it would be completely pointless without it

is it more of a tunnel ripoff than a pale fire one?

>> No.19877102

>>19876970
I would not call it a ripoff of either. It is it's own thing, has some very obvious influences and probably a pile of less obvious influences.

Just answer one question: Is HoL scary or not? Did you, at multiple points while reading the book, feel a genuine sense of terror that went beyond being scared of gory stuff?
I have put House of Leaves on and off my to-read list again and again throughout the years. I do not care about prose quality or postmodernism or fancy formatting and shit anymore. I just wish to be scared. Shitless, preferably.

>> No.19877246

no. at no point was i scared. ppl compare it to creepypastas but its even less scary

>>19877132
For me it was never scary, but it did carry a feeling of sadness and dread throughout it. So yeah you'll probably hate it

That edition defeats the purpose of the cover. The sole purpose of it is for the cover to be smaller than the book it contains.
