Reading Dubliners now and I think most of the stories are really quite great.

I never got around to reading Ulysses because I don’t think that it can ever live up to the impossibly high pedestal it’s been placed on.

I think Finnegan’s wake was a literary shitpost and Joyce was privately laughing at all the “”intellectuals”” trying to derive meaning from it

Little dry and stiff, wish he was a bit more wet and lyrical, and let him self float and sing a bit more. He realized this and tried to make up for it in Finnegan's wake but even then.
Maybe the slow stumpyness of prose just wasn't meant for my quick silver brain

tfw when I ordered Finnegans Wake off amazon and it came with a completely free copy of gravitys rainbow.

I didn't really like most of his books I tried reading. In high school I looked at Ulysses, it was too difficult to keep my attention, okay that's no big deal. But I tried Portrait and Dubliners as well and I just didn't think the stories were that interesting.
He likes a girl and goes to finally give her a letter or some shit but she moves away? And then jerks off and feels ashamed.
Or his uncle is talking Irish politics at dinner. And his grandpa likes smoking pipe and says it's salubrious.
That's about all I remember.

So I didn't like Joyce, get over it. What, am I supposed to like every author who was ever considered great?

>> No.19860167

I'm rather fond of him.
Dubliners was a great read, same with a Portrait, I kinda resonate with Stephen.
When it comes to Ulysses I have to say that a part of it was barely readable, but the Lestrygonians chapter was fucking great, easily my favourite part of the book.
Obviously you have to be some kind of an all-knowing AI to get all the references, but reading up on some irish history and culture was something I really enjoyed and really made me feel like I was getting something out of this book.

Ulysses made me want to try to be a writer of a novel and for that I hate the man
