What are some German novels with good prose? I want to get over my perception of it as overly romantic.

Im reading Simplicius Simplicissimus and that has a kind of medieval sense of humor to it, with people having their nose and ears cut off next to whole chapters of farts and slapstick.

Bernhard and Sebald are among the best prose stylist in German language after WW2. Bernhard in particular addresses directly German "romantic" ideas and their reception in german culture - as well as their implicit kitsch. It's also a super fun read. Gargoyles and Frost are very good starts!

Sebald seems interesting, especially Luftkrieg und Literatur

I really liked E.T.A. Hoffman's Devil's Elixirs. I only read it in English, so I can't say if its prose is Good in German.

It takes a tripfaggot to somehow form the idea that the German language is "overly romantic". IB4 some faggot says that angry sounding noises full of consonants are distinct from conveyed ideas, a misnomer for the language-specific poetics implied by the OP.
