I started reading this, and it's absolute shit. Utterly soulless, feels like eating a plastic burger. It's not funny, it's not entertaining, it's only cute cause it has drawings but other than that characters are as thing as the paper these things get printed on.
Is it really that easy to write a book that sells?

Did you start reading volume 4, or did you start with volume one? In the vein of Log Horizon (and to a lesser extent, SAO), Bofuri captures the joy of playing your first MMO. Discovering game mechanics and exploits, exploring new areas, and overcoming challenges with friends all make Bofuri an enjoyable read. Maple and her girlfriend Sally are truly a cute couple.

If you like cute girls doing cute things (CGDCT) or MMOs, you can expect to enjoy Bofuri.

>Is it really that easy to write a book that sells?
Yes, people still enjoy Man vs Nature and Man vs Society stories. Not everything has to be Man vs Himself or Man vs No God to be enjoyable. Feel free to write your own light novel, the market is booming!

Recommend me a LN that is bleaker than the usual stuff, touches tragic and dark themes, maybe is on the pessimistic side of things, but also has cute girls.
That's all I want.

I can think of manga, anime, and vn that meet that requirement but oddly can't think of many LN. Mushoku Tensei touches on some pretty dark themes and has cute girls, but they're not the protagonist or even really the focus. It's fairly bleak but the LN doesn't dwell on it. The narrative moves at a pretty steady pace.

SAO probably also technically meets your criteria. Kirito is a gary stu but that doesn't mean he doesn't suffer and the situations he gets trapped in are pretty bleak and dark/tragic.

Actually, forget all that bullshit. Read Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash. It's right up your alley. I had to stop reading it years ago because my life went to shit and I didn't want to read anything dark and push myself over the edge. This is what you want.

/lit/ should compile an HISTORICAL FICTION CHART.

The idea is to cover the entirety of human history. Collecting the titles would be a decent collaborative effort since I'm sure different anons are interested in different periods.

>Patrick O'Brien
is a decent take on one small corner of the Napoleonic War, I guess.

I would suggest:

>I, Claudius & Claudius the God, Robert Graves
Rome, about 40-50AD

>Count Belisarius, Robert Graves
Rome, about 500-550AD (This might be a bit biased. Graves's Emperor Justinian is really loathsome. Dunno how mainstream an opinion that is.)

>The Inheritors, William Golding
This would be the first, chronologically, I guess, since it's about Homo Sapiens taking over from Neanderthals, so about 40,000 BC or something. (Maybe technically this is pre-historical fiction, since it's set before writing, but let's not split hairs.)

>Wolf Hall, Bring out the Bodies, The Mirror and the Light (Hilary Mantel)
Henry VIII, about 1520-1550. I'm not sure how accurate they are. They're decently well-written. Her whole shtick is to be the opposite of A Man For All Seasons — i.e. Thomas Cromwell was a good guy and Thomas More was nasty.

How long afterwards do you have to be writing for it to count as historical fiction? A Tale Of Two Cities was published in 1859, which is 80 years after its setting. Is that the minimum?

>> No.19848573

>>19848561
A Tale Of Two Cities was set 70 years previously, not 80 years. I failed to subtract 1789 from 1859.

What's the best historical novel about the American Civil War? Faulkner consciously intended Absalom, Absalom! as such didn't he? That was about 70 years after the fact, same as A Tale of Two Cities.

Historian here, sounds like we need to stop focusing on political and economic history and start framing our narratives around the lives of famous people, more like biographers. This is my idea please don't steal kthxbai.

cope
also this is like objecting to westerns being a genre because it means mccarthy is genre fiction (which he is), or that dystopian fiction isn't a genre because it means orwell is genre fiction (which he is), or that low fantasy isn't a genre because it means borges is genre fiction (which he is). i mean i know people claim all these things but it just looks like total cope after a while

>> No.19849309

>>19849296
>i mean i know people claim all these things
meaning, that the authors listed aren't genre, not that those genres don't exist. it's an especially big cope with borges because, unlike the others, he was explicitly influenced by authors of his genre (i.e. fantasy)

The only one I’ve read is How Few Remain way back in middle school when I noticed it on my history teacher’s bookshelf. I came to /lit/ because I’ve already read all my /pol/ books so now I’m looking for more literature to occupy my time. What Turtledove series do you recommend besides Southern Victory?

I highly recommend the one where lizard aliens invade right in the middle of WW2. I think it's called colonization or something? Anyway it goes through WW2 and beyond for I think 8 or 10 books and it's pretty entertaining throughout.

His series about Atlantis being a real continent in the middle of the Atlantic is also pretty interesting.

I also really enjoyed his book, I think it was called Toxic Spell Dump or something to that effect, which is a mystery novel set in LA in like the 80s, but magic based on religions is real. It's a delightful blend of a time when California wasn't quite so bad, bureaucracy of state governments, and magic similar to the magic in To Aru Majutsu no Index.

Interesting, the Atlantis book seems like the one I’d be most likely to read as I’m not that big into sci-fi. I’ll definitely pick up his Agent of Byzantium books as I’m a huge sucker for the Byzantine Empire
