About level 5, if I need a supplementary essay when reading a book, the author didn't make a good job.
The reason because level 2 is considered peak literature is because being inaccessible isn't a virtue by itself, and often the capacity of an author to flawlessly transmit his ideas is worth much more than whatever other authors have going for them.
I won't disagree on the placement of the authors themselves, because I haven't read many of them so making a comparison would be disingenuous, but I think it's a bad way to classify books.

Really disappointed I didn't see F Gardner at the bottom, OP. Fix it.

Above level 3 is intellectual masturbation, nothing worthy there.
Literature is about humans talking to humans, not about being obscure on purpose to appear more intellectual.

Don't believe the list. Most are thrown wherever simply on impressions and popularity.

Yes. this list of a hundred writers made for a meme image was 100% well researched and they definitely didn't get fatigue making it and just start throwing writers wherever the fuck they wanted.
Come on anon. It takes a young person to make a stupid meme like this. You think a 20 year old read all of those authors? Multiple books of their work?
Because I hope you don't think a 50 year old made that image.

Arguably more experimental at least. Maybe whoever made the list values that more than everything else

achingly inaccurate as a comparison between texts, but furthermore the whole concept is horribly flawed.
Probably bait, we should all lurk more.

You don't read late Burroughs.

You penetrate him. With an army of parachuting anarcho-communist time travelling twink genre fiction boys attached at their spine to their kit of squash head anti-Tankie armoured piercing MANPADs.

Personally, I ensure that I take copious amounts of Opiates so that I don't become infected with the bisexual time travelling communist virus created by Tibetian suicigasm cultists.

Everything is Permitted: Except for the Permitters.
