Except for the anglocentrism.
No reason for Shakespeare or Paradise lost being on Primary texts and the likes of Divine Comedy and Faust for fuck's sakes being Secondary.
Also Pilgrim's Progress is far from being essential.
20th Century is also filled with trash and/or high school literature.

One of the better /his/ charts I've found. For a good chunk of them it's clear the person who made the chart has never even read any of the listed books.
Most of the books I've read on here are pretty good. If you want a book on Venice, Venice: A Maritime Republic.

When you look at the top 10's of /lit/ since 2014 you really learn what the world is coming to.
They're now full of strong heroes who defy all odds in such a way that everything was stacked against them. Whether the hero wins or loses, the challenges themselves are beyond grand.

>> No.19793216

Look. I know it's easy and fun to take cheap shots at American schooling. But it really is bad. Students are only taught what they can use to be productive worker bees. Math so they can keep time and add and subtract parts for building cars or whatever. History being just lists of names and dates. I sure learned Rosa Parks sat in the back of the bus but I didn't know where Napoleon was from, even though one of his most famous names was the Corsican Ogre.
American children are not taught any philosophy at all, just the years around where Aristotle existed.
Even fucking Home-Ec can't teach kids to cook.
Health classes are pathetic jokes. You don't learn about how to ensure you get proper nutrition, just the names of things so they can go on multiple choice tests. Like they don't even consider moving Health and Home-Ec one after the other so you can collaborate for a longer period so you have more time for bigger projects.

In short, I was shocked to learn that Count of Monte Cristo is like 8th grade stuff. That boys are supposed to read the Lord of the Rings when they're 10... It's why I didn't read Wuthering Heights when I was supposed to. I was too stupid to care or understand any of what was going on in that book. I read it later and was blown away by how much I enjoyed it.
