Like 10 books at once, different subjects, themes, lit and nonfiction, sometimes I grow too uncomfortable like madame Bovary or Dostoyevsky.

I take notes, after years of practice with a number to the left, the page, normally on grid paper, and I try to reduce the idea to a sentence no more than three.
Date, title, year author at top, page numbers too

Your inestimable lack of value arises from your inability to express your opinion.

You would bring a new darkness to the world to find your consumerist comforts. You would help realize Shigalov's ambitions of evening out humanity through a selective breeding program to create docile idiots in the fashion of Harrison Bergeron.

Loved it. Among my favorite books I read last year (which surprised me, I am usually more of a traditional narrative guy). Expressionistic, funny, observant, crazy. I have an interest in rave/drug/dj culture and have hunted around for fiction that captures it. Too often these books are poorly observed or have a sad addiction plotline or are too experimental. For me this one gets it right, it really does feel like a fractured drug trip complete with the epiphanies, the boredom, the elliptical sense of "narrative." Of course it isn't for everyone but try going down to the store and reading the first 15 pages or so and you'll get an idea.

No.
>How many books are you actively reading at once?
Two. I read one at home, the other when I'm commuting to work, during my breaks and in cafes. Usually this book is an anthology of short stories, a book with short chapters or a short book.

I don't know. I really enjoyed the Gately arc but not really anything else. If you find the subject matter at all interesting (find some synopsis or youtube review), it's probably something to experience, but I don't think I'll ever read it again.

Read his stories first, and if you're really into, you'll probably be into this.

Do you have Werner's Iliad too or just the Odyssey? I'm reading it right now. Not sure about his use of composite adjectives: "Lança-de-Longe" for Apollo and "cara-de-cadela" for Helena, for example.
Great shelf, anyway. Is that Chekhov's Sakhalin Island on the left of Tolstoy?

I only have the Odyssey from him. My Iliad is the Lourenço's translation, not the best one.
From Chekhov I have some books, mostly short stories collections from Editora 34 and LPM and some plays. I don't have Sakhalin Island, unfortunately.
Show us your shelf, anon.

Why do people keep their books up against the wall of their bookshelves? It looks hideous. Why not have them at the very edge instead?

For me, it’s easier. I shelve them alphabetically, and when I have to move some across shelves or cases, it’s easier for me to push them back instead of aligning them to the front.

I agree it looks nicer, I’m just lazy.

Anyone have any suggestions for keeping a book from getting destroyed while in transport, in a backpack?
I have a sling bag I use to carry my lunch in and some other stuff for work. I kept a book in it, and it got destroyed pages and cover bent to fuck, etc. Also happened with another one I kept in there.
I want to be able to bring a book to work though without it getting destroyed.

I carry a small cloth bag which covers the books, and I put both in a tote. Double layering with the inner layer being somewhat softer, the outer being a little more coarse and rigid has worked well for me.

the only way is to either have you backpack totally empty or totally filled with clothes or towels. Otherwise I'd recommend useing an old slipcase or securing it between two hard things like planks or something with some rubber bands. Basically preventing the book from opening is most important. Preventing the points of a paperback getting damaged is basically impossible however in a bag

I have vol2 sitting in the tbr. I’ll likely do a round of economics sometime in the near future. I’ve wanted to get some more exposure to classical, heterodox, and even some ancap before culminating in piketty.
