1977573 No.1977573 [Reply] [Original]

I started reading it today, I'm only about 30 pages in, this is much heavier going than I thought. I think even for the 19th century, this language is quite complex and flowery. it's already made me smile and laugh a few times, though. I know this board is (surprisingly) quite into this book.

Thanks for telling us. You might as well just tell us you hate it now since your opinions are all wrong.

I think Stephanie Mayer is a more skilled writer than James Joyce.

The only parts i found a little hard going were some the non-fiction sections about the history and practice of whaling, especially his conclusion that whales are fish and not mammals.

I know a few marine biologists who might disagree with that.

I don't really, I just said that to get my point across.

Moby-Dick is an amazing novel.

Be sure to let us know the next time you open a book or decide to wipe your bum, it would be much appreciated.

$10 says you come back in a week and complain about how it sucks.

Indeed, i would recommend skipping that chapter when you realise that you're reading it. Unless you have some interest in the history of biological classification.

>> No.1978112

>>1977634
Why would you skip a chapter explaining his slightly fictionalized version of whaling in a book that uses said version of whaling as a highly-complex metaphor? You're missing the point. You don't read Moby-Dick just for the plot, sir.

>> No.1978124

This. Plus, some of those chapters may make for somewhat dry reading, but the prose is still beautiful. Personally that was what I enjoyed in the novel most of all.

Moby Dick is a masterpiece.

>> No.1978185

The only thing you should skip, and you probably shouldn't, is the encyclopedic chapter about whales. Read a bit of it, maybe skim it, or skip it, but read everything else.

It's fucking great.

SPEAK FOR YOURSELF, I THINK IT'S A PIECE OF A SHIT WHERE THE MESSAGE IS MADE AS CLEAR AS FUCKING DAYLIGHT, ONCE YOU GET THROUGH ALL THE IRRELEVANT CRAP ABOUT WHALES FROM A GUY WHO THOUGHT THEY WERE FISH.

Damn, that's a good point. I don't want to read hundreds of pages about whales only to discover that it's now all outdated.

They should really rewrite this book so that it adheres to modern science.

I DON'T GET THE WHOLE DEAL WITH WESTERNERS AND DOSTOEVSKY. YOU DO REALISE THAT HE IS A POET OF THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE, AND THAT NO-ONE HAS EVER REALLY CAPTURED HIS ESSENCE IN TRANSLATION, RIGHT? SO YOU KNOW YOU'RE ALL JUST SAYING THAT YOU LOVE IT BECAUSE YOU SHOULD, BECAUSE YOU HAVE LITERALLY NEVER READ IT, RIGHT?

OH, AND FUCKING FORGET CHEKHOV, YOU WILL NEED A NATIONALITY REASSIGNMENT TO DIG THAT CRAZY MOTHERFUCKNIG SHIT.

ENJOY YOUR 'RUSSIAN LITERATURE' FAGLORDS.
YOU'RE READING VICTORIAN ENGLISH MOST OF THE TIME, AND IN THE BEST CASE SCENARIO, CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH PROVIDED BY A FAILED NOVELIST.
That's like calling a child's scribbles with crayon fine art. Dostoevsky was no poet. Every novel he wrote is like a 40 year old fat man who hasn't showered in months. It's messy.

Therefore, your argument is invalid and I'm going to go ahead and disregard everything you say because I assume you're mentally retarded and having some kind of fit a la Benjy Compson when he mistakes a golf caddie for his sister Caddy.

>I THINK IT'S A PIECE OF A SHIT WHERE THE MESSAGE IS MADE AS CLEAR AS FUCKING DAYLIGHT

Oh really? I bet the only thing you got from it was the Allegory. That's the simple part. Also, what was the "message"? Did you get all the satire, shots at organized religion and society? All the philosophy criticisms? The literary criticisms? All the allusions? All the criticisms of naturalists of the time? ect.. ect.. No you probably missed most the themes too. Good job faggot. You managed to realize the allegory. Moby-Dick is a lot more than that.

>BUT THEN AGAIN, PRETTY MUCH EVERY ' THE AMERICAN NOVEL' IS CRAP

Great Gatsby is amazing.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is amazing
East of Eden is amazing
The Sound and the Fury is amazing
Moby Dick is amazing

What the fuck you talking about? Must have shit taste.
