Think of it as the body without organs, but instead of a body it's the world and instead of organs it's Disneyland.

Seems like he's just saying our perception of reality is imperfect.

Everything around us is a front, but culture produces certain things which are obviously fake, so they make other stuff which is more subtle in its fakeness seem more real, such as democracy, freedom, etc.

America is filled with TV, plastic, roads, corn syrup, etc., all of which is manufactured and artificial, but people rarely think so because Disneyland is so perceivably fake it makes the rest of America look real.

You see a college kid in a Mickey costume, you think “oh look, Mickey”, but then you catch yourself and think “not the actual Mickey, of course”. But there never was an actual Mickey. You are presented with an impersonation of fiction that in turn makes the initial fiction real.

The allusion is that industrial society is a Disneyland. The culture in which we work and sleep are no more imaginary than the fantasy in Disneyland. The only horrifying difference is we take the rides seriously; we do not plan their course.

>> No.19770740

Isn't he just saying that Disneyland is explicitly made up which makes us forget that our "land" is also made up? I don't get what's confusing.

Let me rephrase: the hamburger is presented as junk food to make us think that supermarket food is healthy.

No, simulacra are modeled after a prototype. He's saying there is no prototypical Mickey because Mickey doesn't exist in any form (even the first 'appearance' of Mikey - his character exists as a synthesis between the static images that when run through a film projector produce the illusion of movement and thus the gestures and mannerisms associated with his character)
I mean if you want to get really lineage obsessed, then maybe he is a simulacra of a simulacra of a simulacra ad infinitum until you get to the first black boy minstrel show character.
White gloves on characters like Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny are a relic of blackface. However they are not simulacra of blackface

>Jean Baudrillard: "Disneyland is presented as imaginary in order to make us believe that the rest is real, when in fact all of Los Angeles and the America surrounding it are no longer real, but of the order of the hyperreal and of simulation.”
Simulation: be teenage me > visits Disneyland's Tom Sawyer Island > are those autumn leaves on the roof of the shack actual fallen leaves, or fake ("simulation of~") leaves, carefully put there as part of the "hyperreal illusion" of (Tom Sawyer Island) reality?
Everything is now conditioned by this state of simulation (Times Square, Las Vegas, Venice, shopping centres, &c.)

No offense, but this hwole stick by Baudrillard kinda is rudely against Hegel and therefore I will not tolerate it.

Read "How to Build a Universe That Doesn’t Fall Apart Two Days Later" by Philip K. Dick.

He stole the whole idea from there. Dick explains it better.
