I bought this.
What can I expect?
Was Thomas Carlyle a good writer? What are /lit/‘s thoughts on the man?

Don't know /lit's thoughts on Carlyle, but Otto Weininger, who was basically a better version of /lit, thought highly of him. Nietzsche didn't like him though

The most enjoyable version of the French Revolution. It's not the most accurate, but yes he can write and well enough that nobody gives a damn about accuracy.

The book succeeds in portraying such of the more dramatic events of the Revolution with a striking immediacy that makes the book worthwhile. At other points, however, Carlyle frustrates by including lengthy passages of melodramatic commentary.

It should go without saying, but Edmund Burke is still essential reading on the French Revolution/Reign of Terror, perhaps more than Carlyle although they are quite different.

I'd say I'm pretty fond of this. My one real qualm is that Carlyle espouses the notion that Jean Paul Marat was the comte d'Artois' veterinarian, when he was actually the personal doctor to his corps of bodyguards.
