I know I'm probably late to the party on this but I only just now finished it. Ugh, it felt like it was only slightly better than the fourth book. Why does GRRM seem to think it's a good idea to focus an entire chapter of mundane crap then end it right as it might get interesting?

Anyway, I've been avoiding /lit/ to avoid spoilers till I finished it. What the general opinion regarding it? Am I alone in feeling like it was boring?

Not alone, Anon. I really started to miss Westeros after being stuck in Meereen for so long. The Cersei and Jaime chapters came as a blessed relief, but were entirely too short for my liking. Even the Tyrion chapters weren't as good this time around.

All the good parts seemed to be crammed at the end. However, Theon's arc I think proved to be very entertaining.

Tyrion, Quentyn and Dany chapters were the only boring ones, and those only because they should've been more condensed. Everything else was pretty top notch stuff.

Jon is definitely not my favorite character but I enjoyed him here even with the flood of chapters. His chapters illustrated the difficulties of ruling far more interestingly than Dany's chapters.

also,

I thought it was good, slightly better than AFFC. Power rankings so far for me are.
CoK = ADWD > AFFC > GOT > SOS

I cannot even comprehend how you believe this

At least we got a conclusion to Theon. Knowing that he can die as himself now. Too bad Ramsey seems to win again.

Apperently it's not a good time to be a Spearmaiden in Westeros at the moment. I bet Osha dies in the next book too.

With books 4 and 5 originally intended as one book, I got the feeling that after splitting it in twain he did a bit too much padding (maybe 200 pages or more per book.
Feast and Dragons would have been a pretty kickass 1300 page book, but was slightly disappointing as two 1000 page books.
Also, I'm not entirely used to entirely new character arcs being introduced 4000 pages into a series, but I'm adapting.
Victarion and Barristan POVs were my favorites, but I don't mind the Danys or Tyrion chapters, I can see the point of them. Quentyn alone seemed like a lot of wasted time.

It's not a good time to be anything in the seven kindgoms short of a complete monster.

AFFC = ASoS > AGoT > ADWD > ACoK

I've said it before and I'll say it again aSoIaF is a five book series masquerading as a seven book series.
