Why is the prose so fucking good bros?

>> No.19699676

Because it's DeLillo. Great book.

I love this one, looking to bring some DeLillo to my book club, but I can't justify making them read something this long. Any standouts among his shorter work? (ideally under 300 pgs)

white noise is great, like a miniature prototype of underworld, but i know a bit basic - another idea might be to first put forward just the baseball scene that begins underworld, it almost functions as a standalone story, and then when they're hooked, you've successfully radicalised them into a delillo reading cell and u can go further.

cosmopolis is 220 pages and i think underrated (although most of his other books are certainly better)

Libra is obviously the superior novel

Where should i start with Delillo, bros?

Running Dog, Libra or White Noise.

The Body Artist is probably his most poorly received novel ever besides maybe The Silence. So start over with Libra.

White Noise was the work of an amateur hack and I have seen no reason for it to be regarded as even a good book, much less a classic.

>> No.19701388

>>19700931
If a challenging, unapproachable novel by a (white and male) literary author gets published and has lots of promotion today, midwits get filtered and review bomb it. It didn't help that they advertised The Silence as a novel inspired by the pandemic and social media which sucked in these idiots. See also, The Book of Numbers by Joshua Cohen (2.97) and Satin Island by Tom McCarthy (3.23), though Delillo got it the worst of all. The Silence is a perfectly fine late Delillo novel: I'd rank it around the middle, near Zero K.
If you see a sub-3.50 score for a literary novel published in the last 10 years on Goodreads, that tells you the book is actually different from the pack and is more worth your time than the latest Booker winner.

I read White Noise and absolutely hated it. What am I missing?

It seemed to me that all of his characters are just mouthpieces for the author, and otherwise totally drained of life and humanity. Like, there is not one single "human" interaction in the whole book.

I have little-to-no interest in modern fiction but a small part of me wants to read this book for no other reason than that I really like the techno band Underworld, who wrote a song called "Mmm Skyscraper I love you" many years ago.

That's exactly why it's good. Don Delillo, by himself, is better than 99.9% of humans and their interactions.
