Having well-done illustrations in your novel is an amazing thing and I wish it was done more often.

The Folio Society is my best example of this kind of thing, but their books literally cost hundreds of dollars per.

Why don't more publishers do this?

there are very few artists left in the world who can make good looking monochrome works that would look good coming off a book-tier printing and considering that most people don’t even expect illustrations in their novels anymore, it’s not worth the cost of commission.

the "old masters" are literally considered superior to modern artists tho lel, before industrialization an artist would spend his youth as a virtual slave to a master and then join a guild with strict standards enforced and it shows, artlets.

yes they would spend months on a single painting too. that’s irrelevant though this conveersation is about this statement
>there are very few artists left in the world who can make good looking monochrome works that would look good coming off a book-tier printing
which is just retarded

>> No.19699452

>>19699414
it is technically retarded but in practice it is correct in a limited way. a modern illustration, let alone digital one, would absolutely be soulless compared to genuine 19th century plates etc. unless the artist was a period autist and made them to perfect spec which we all know won't happen.

Technically speaking many contemporary (commercial, mind you, not "fine" artists who are just frauds) artists are legitimately more skilled than the masters of the past. The problem isn't technical, the problem is that literally none of these artists, not even a single one of them, is concerned with art. If you look at the writings and dialogues with many of the great painters of the past, they were quite concerned with art itself, WHY am I making art. People like Ilya Repin made paintings because they were fascinated not just with shapes or forms but because they had a mission in life that they needed to achieve through art. This is how you get painters like Repin, who are masters of the craft not because they knew how to paint better than anyone else, but because they understood what it meant to make art. Nowadays you have absolutely astounding realist artists who can paint like Sargent but have absolutely no idea of what they're doing on a human, artistic, philosophical level. They just know how to execute a very good realist painting.

I live in Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art has a pretty good collection of Old Master paintings, but nowhere near as good as the collections in NYC at places like the Met.
If there is one truth from this collection in Philly, there are plenty of crappy old master paintings, some of which were allegedly painted by old masters who were well known by the general public, or which came from their studios.
And by “crappy”, I mean poorly painted, and lacking in skill.

only illustrations I've enjoyed so far are the ones by Doré.
Makes the experience much nicer. I've read the divine comedy, the bible and orlando furioso in editions with his illustrations and they are all amazing.

My edition is an italian one from the end of 1890. It has LOTS of illustrations, but at least half of them aren't full page. It's the only book that I've seen with small illustrations by doré.

Your revolution is a sad, ill-wrought fantasy that will never come into being. Have fun remaining useful to the people you despise regardless.
