>Taking my 3rd poetry class this fall (not english major, just taking poetry classes because I like them)
>Buy a copy of "Leaves of Grass"
>Plan on re-writing the whole book into notebooks throughout the semester

Is this a good idea? I know many writers use this as an exercise to get "the feel" of great writing.
Discuss.

Do it if you want. I've just been on /b/ typing out short stories for people. At the very least it's something to do, and it will get you closer to the work.

Do it. It's enjoyable.

depends. you reading the 1855 edition or the deathbed one?

Worth typing, but not worth writing longhand, no.

to elaborate, since you're not responding and I'm going grocery shopping now, the better version is the 1855 version. the deathbed version isn't worse on all counts (there is some value added over the course of 40 years) but most of his revisions to "song of myself" for example do nothing but fuck with a great thing. The 1855 version really is as close to a perfect work as he ever published. copy that one.

fuck yes, although I think this works better for prose, for poetry you HAVE to reread. I suggest you try to memorize some verses instead rewriting.

also, whitman is the greatest

Owning this book is like a formal plea to be fucked in the asshole.

Well, you have an interesting way of thinking about people's book collections.

So you know, I don't own this book, so please keep away from me. Not that there's anything wrong with that...ahem...
