Am Dutch, have not touched a single book by a Dutch author since high school. We have no literary capabilities to speak of. I would recommend reading Dutch translations of worthwhile works, if I read a non English foreign book I almost always read the Dutch translation, I think the language can be quite beautiful, and certainly funny. We just haven't found a way to use it ourselves yet.
Pic is of the only book I enjoyed reading in high school, don't know for certain if I'd still like it but found it funny at the time.
Also Nederland is kankerlauw vriend.

Well, unless you're Macedonian or Montenegrin I guess there is little point in recommending A. den Doolaard then, wrote some kino books on the Balkans and lived in Ohrid during the 20th century. Also, I personally was disappointed by it (and also its lack of engagement with Yugoslav historiography) but Guido van Hengels Roedel: een alternatieve geschiedenis van Joegoslavië might be of interest to you. Haven't read it yet, but Macht en Verzet by Bulgarian author Ilja Trojanow is now on sale - ''ramsj'' - in Dutch bookstores for 10 euros in hardover. Don't bother with all the Dutch books on Bosnia or Srebrenica, including Raymond Detrez's (Belgian historian) biased books.

Some personal recent faves:
Koen Peeters - Duizend Heuvels (Belgian)
J. Bernlef - Hersenschimmen
Miquel Bulnes - Bloed in onze aderen, or one of his other books
Recent work by Auke Hulst (like De Mitsukoshi Troostbaby, although I still have to read it) or Rob van Essen (De Goede Zoon, Miniapolis)

A classic which I would still recommend is Max Havelaar's Multatulli but desu I never read many other Dutch classics. Would rather recommend you Kader Abdolah or Kinderen van Breznjev by Sana Valiulina.

If you're into something different: Thea Beckman's Thule trilogy is I guess young adult literature but is about a post-nuclear world in which Greenland is a new lush country attracting the interest of overpopulated, aridifying Europe.

I think the reason most Dutch people rarely read after high school is because we have to read 19th century boring books by Couperus or equally less interesting stuff like Reve or Mulisch which turns many people from engaging with Dutch literature any time soon, including myself - such a shame. Personally mainly read foreign stuff too, but our educational system is really ruining things.

Read De Uitvreter, Titaantjes and Dichtertje by Nescio, literarily it's the best thing we did. De Avonden by Gerard Reve is fucking great but I'm not sure anyone not Dutch would "get it". In my opinion it's a masterwork, and if you understand it you have the key to understanding this whole fucking country. Max Havelaar by Multatuli is an interesting read.

We had some good poets, Slauerhoff, Marsman, Rutger Kopland, Hans Faverey. Paul van Ostaijen and Guido Gezelle and Tom Lanoye if Flemish counts.

Tim Krabbe is great. "The Golden Egg" especially but also his other works.

So far I've only read the first two harry potter and a few moomin books that were in danish but would like something that isnt written for children to strengthen my grammer and vocab
