Gerry Anderson's shows were a huge influence, not just on Anno but on anime and Japanese culture in general. It probably helps that Anderson was influential to tokusatsu pioneer Eiji Tsuburaya as well, whose shows like Ultraman are beloved by Anno. An organisation like NERV is reminiscent of International Rescue in Thunderbirds or even moreso SHADO from UFO (or the Ultra Guard from Ultraseven, Tsuburaya's take on an Anderson-esque show). This video conveniently demonstrates a lot of these homages, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LB12HNNDDcc.. It also occurred to me recently that the countdown that occurs when an Eva is disconnected from its umbilical cable is basically like Ultraman's colour timer.

He’s somehow very rich which makes the whole thing make even less sense. Why all this effort? He’s written a fuckton of books and spent who knows how much money at this point. I can’t figure this part out other than it really being sheer narcissism and he thinks he’s an artistic genius. So you might be right about that part but I don’t know. Plenty of his other books have been memes and advertised: call of the arcade, jigoku, call of f Gardner just before Christmas.
Since he puts no effort into the writing and clearly makes his own covers, the only thing he spends on is ads, which is somewhat believable because they charge in such small increments it can be like gambling— say you pay 10 cents for a click, it sounds cheap, so you end up spending 100 dollars in two weeks.

Glad you found it interesting. Don’t go into it expecting a full novel, it’s more like a collection of character sketches. Kino as fuck, I hope you enjoy it. These ones also made me buy the space trilogy. I think they’re well made and I tried to imitate them.

I'm halfway through it and it didn't blow me away until now. I don't like his prose at all, the story telling and pacing are shit and I'm yet to find any philosophy besides "isolation is: LE BAD". Does it get better?
