The only version in available in America is the Great Illustrated Classics version.

They are abridged and simplified versions but most editions seem to have the integral text. Even then most of them seem pretty bad when I see how poor the annotations are or the font/size used. That's why I'm asking if there's any edition everyone commonly agrees is good.

So which is the correct version, you faggots? I swear, this board will never make me feel like I’m reading the correct edition/translation of anything. Why does literature have to be like this?

There isn't. If you actually look at the first two editions - American and British - you'll see vast differences. The British one lacked the final chapter entirely, and it had a different title - "The Whale".

>>19647192
As others have said, Norton. Has both detailed footnotes and appendix material - criticism from Melville's time to today, letters, biographic material, etc. Not something to read all the way through, but biting into it from time to time is always interesting.

The first British edition hasn't been in print for over one hundred years, you pedantic moron. For all intents and purposes there's only one version of the text of Moby-Dick and OP should stop wasting his time worrying about which edition to buy.
