The diary seems to likely be not real just based on how wildly different it is from how a young girl would actually write, plus the fact that her father kept "finding" new pages for new editions.

But I've also read that

1: her father was wanted by the Nazis for forgery

2: a Dutch court determined large sections matched the father's handwriting

3: the father was sued by a different Jewish man who'd adapted the diary into an authorized play, and that court case calls the authorship into question

4: some sections were written in ballpoint pen, which didn't exist in Frank's lifetime (apologia says it's just her father's notes in ballpoint, while critics say it was substantive passages)

I've never seen hard sources on these criticisms though, so if any /pol/ types are lurking and want to swoop in, please do

I can believe that, but were they available to consumers. Just because there is a prototype doesn't mean the invention saw widespread use. Based on Wikipedia, they did not proliferate until after WWII, and when they did, they were extremely expensive ($180 in 2020 money). We can be quite sure that Anne Frank did not have access to a ballpoint pen.
