So this is the midwit list of books to avoid?

Then where's the list I should read if I want to be truly /lit/.

>> No.19606714

>>19606509
Last year's list(s) was better.

>> No.19606733

there are good books on there but together they take on a gauche "look at how smart I (hope I) am" aesthetic that makes me want to take a shower.
but ranking books inevitably does that because ranking literature is like ranking people, reductive and futile and the person doing the ranking ends up showing more about themselves than they probably hoped to.
It sort of makes sense that this list is as it is though because it was an open poll and some books are more well loved or known than others, but if someone sent me this list and said it was their personal favorites I would think that they govern their soul by consensus and I probably wouldn't invite them around anymore.

Like a mix of virtue signaling list and name recognition list. Also moby dick was great tho (look at my virtue)

>gauche "look at how smart I (hope I) am" aesthetic
How come half of the books on the list are pulp then

>> No.19606894

Nah. It was shit.

>> No.19606904

>> No.19606961

And even so it was still better.

>> No.19607035

>>19606904
ah yes famously difficult galaxy brain authors like dostoevsky, tolkien, mishima and herbert

>> No.19607113

>>19606961
Nah. This one's better. This one is atleast true to the vote. Last year's were fraudulent.

im genuinely curious as to why you people think its strange or taboo for a top 100 list to be dominated by classics. what do you expect, a bunch of YA genre fiction? are you a hipster trying to stroke yourself off for liking some uber niche novels? it seriously feels like posts such as yours are just compensation for something to make yourself feel better. i genuinely want to know why it is you posted this, what thought went into it, and what you expected to gain from it

brainlet books shouldnt be allowed on lists like these just invites shitposters

>> No.19607390

A lot of those books are technically impressive but absolute fucking slogs to read through while maintaining your sanity. Why are /lit/nerds like this? I don’t want a masterpiece of spinning together impressive words and sentences and deep but ultimately forgettable quotes - I want a good story with characters that I can emotionally connect with doing something deeper and more meaningful than having a 10 hour schizophrenic internal monologue about pooping into another mans butt. FUCK

>> No.19607392

This list is like lit ten years ago except with Dune and more /pol/ neofascist literature

The classics shouldn't be on this list. Start with the greeks etc is ENTRY LEVEL before you can even begin to appreciate all other literature. 99% have never rwad any classic literature, so i agree, in this context its just showboating

>characters that I can emotionally connect with doing something deeper and more meaningful
that is pretty much what defines a lot of these books lol, its a pretty sizable bunch of them are all intimate character driven stories that touch on the human experience in ways that are very emotionally compelling

the only thing gayer than contributing to a hecking top 100 smartest books list is pointing out which of them are actually fucking garbage pulp for fucking retard midwits

>> No.19609243

>>19607607
The only thing gayer than pointing out which of the 'smartest books' are actually fucking garbage pulp for fucking retard midwits is wasting time pointing out how retarded that is to the midwits participating in the practice.

(And before you get there, no, pointing out your own retardation is not even more retarded than that, as it is both a valuable public service and personally enjoyable. Merry Christmas, anon).

what i expected to gain from a 4chan post? what kind of stupid question is that? What do you expect to gain by being a dweeby little contrarian?
I literally said that it makes sense for well known and well loved books to make the top of the list. I dont think its strange or taboo at all, those are your words not mine. I was saying that the idea of ranking fiction is fucking stupid.
Imo a more interesting list would preclude novels that had been on a previous years list, but that would require a literature discussion board to actually sniff out new fiction and not just circle jerk and argue over the same books that anyone over the age of 24 has already read, a big ask i know. But i actually like to read and get turned onto new stuff so maybe im the freak here.
