why would you get reading "advice" from people who dont read?

There's a lot of shit from other books that Dante references, anon. Probably around 40% of the book is spent talking with/about all kinds of characters from the Greeko-Roman mythos, various historical figures and small time Italian politicians and clergy.

You dun goofed, then. You should have listened to me:

Look, I know how the particular impulse to read something can come and go. Dante is good stuff, and far more engaging than a lot of serious literature. Give it a shot. There's a better than even chance you'll enjoy it. It moves fast -- a concise narrative with a strong forward momentum.

Shit like this has prevented me from reading so many books because I'm scarted I won't get all the references

Reading Dante is very, very difficult. It's like wanting to start at Quantum Field Theory when you don't know basic trigonometry. It's best to enjoy the ride, though, because if you keep at it, you'll get stronger.

you wouldn't understand dante without context, simple as

Jesus Christ OP, how much of a retard are you? I can tell you never wanted to read anything to begin with, because instead of reading you're just making more and more posts on 4chan.

I'm reading the aporetic dialogues and American psycho, going the whole Dante pipeline seems really dry now and I don't want to do it

theres your problem

Don't ever listen to lit about reading orders. Your brain is a connection-drawing, pattern-deducing computer. You don't need to ingest information in a linear manner in order to synthesize it. Reading Dante will turn you on to a bunch of historical, religious, and philosophical concepts you'll want to read later.

congrats, literature is not for you

Just as well not reading him.
Unless you’re Italian or something

If you ever decide to finally read the Divine Comedy, you can watch the 100 days of Dante series on youtube. The series has a video analysis per canto (though the series is still ongoing).
