19561153 No.19561153 [Reply] [Original]

For those who have philosophized in both an idealist and materialist style, what are the differences and similarities between the two methods?

They aren't really methods, but rather metaphysical views about the primary substance of reality. Using a materialist lense without having a materialist metaphysics is a dead end.

Materialists employ more "scientific" language as their entire philosophy is dependent on science and the scientific method.

How is Democritus a materialist?

Does materialism always lead to nihilism and atheism? That's what happened to me anyways

>> No.19563163

That depends. Do you think matter is "living"(conscious, animated, etc.) or do you think matter is "dead"(inert, empty, etc.)? If you answer this question I think the perspective will be clear to you.

Hobbes was a Christian. The midwits on the bottom row were not philosophers.

Materialism proper, as in not romantic compatibilism or quantum nonsense, is the most intellectually dignified position after Idealism.

Most of materialist discourse doesn't even deal with the issue of free will in order to be subjected to your pleb dichotomy. Neither does most of Idealism, btw.
